Hyundai S-309L.17 E309L-17 Dissimilar Steel Welding Electrode
The Hyundai S-309L.17 is an over-alloyed stainless steel covered electrode made for joining dissimilar steels and for depositing buffer layers before stainless build-up. Its classifications are AWS A5.4 / ASME SFA-5.4 E309L-17, JIS Z 3221 ES309L-17 and EN ISO 3581-A E 23 12 L R. According to Hyundai Welding, the weld metal offers good resistance to heat and corrosion and good crack resistance, the slag is easy to remove, and the 17-type coating has high moisture resistance. ABS approval appears on the datasheet. Seven Star LLC supplies the Hyundai S-309L.17 across Oman and the GCC, and the manufacturer datasheet is attached to this page.
The Role of a 309L Electrode
Many plants contain joints where stainless steel meets carbon steel: stainless nozzles on carbon steel vessels, stainless pipe supports welded to structural steel, liners attached to carbon steel shells, and transitions in piping systems. If such a joint were welded with a matching 308L filler, mixing with the carbon steel side could dilute the weld metal enough to form brittle martensite and cause cracking. A 309L consumable solves this by carrying extra chromium and nickel, so that even after dilution the deposit stays austenitic with some ferrite for crack resistance.
The Hyundai S-309L.17 deposits typically 23.9% chromium and 12.9% nickel with only 0.03% carbon. That composition gives the headroom needed for dissimilar welds and for the first layer of stainless overlay on carbon steel, which the manufacturer calls a buffer layer for build-up.

Where It Is Used
For industrial customers in Oman, the Hyundai S-309L.17 typically goes into:
- Carbon steel to 304L or 316L joints on vessels, skids and piping in oil, gas and chemical plants.
- The first, buffer layer of stainless weld overlay on carbon steel before matching stainless layers.
- Attachment of stainless clips, supports, nameplates and liners to carbon steel structures.
- Repair of 309-type heat-resistant parts in furnaces, kilns and boiler areas within the electrode’s datasheet scope.
- Maintenance work in cement, mining and power plants where mixed-material repairs are routine.
Practical Guidance for Dissimilar Joints
This section reflects general welding knowledge and is not part of the Hyundai datasheet. The aim in a dissimilar weld is to control dilution: keep the arc directed slightly towards the stainless side or onto the previous bead, use stringer beads and moderate current, and avoid large weaves that pull in extra carbon steel. Any preheat is set by the requirements of the carbon or low alloy side, and the Schaeffler or WRC-1992 diagrams are commonly used by engineers to predict the final weld structure. When the joint will operate at high temperature for long periods, or will be post-weld heat treated, a nickel-base filler is often considered instead of 309L, so service conditions should be reviewed by the welding engineer. For overlays, the buffer layer is usually followed by a layer of the alloy that matches the required surface chemistry.
Selecting the Right Size
When planning consumables for the Hyundai S-309L.17, think about the thinnest member in each joint. Small brackets, thin liners and tube attachments are usually welded with 2.0 or 2.6 mm electrodes, where a low current keeps penetration shallow and limits mixing with the carbon steel. The 3.2 mm size covers most structural attachments and pipe joints, and 4.0 mm suits thicker plate and overlay buffer layers in the flat position, where it lays down metal faster. The 5.0 mm electrode has only a flat and horizontal current range on the datasheet, so it is best reserved for heavy work in those positions. A balanced order of the Hyundai S-309L.17 in two or three sizes is often enough for a shutdown, and Seven Star LLC can help you estimate the split from your joint list and the expected weld metal weight per joint.
Benefits for Workshops and Maintenance Teams
Keeping a stock of the Hyundai S-309L.17 means one Hyundai S-309L.17 electrode type can cover most carbon steel to stainless repairs found during a shutdown. The 17-type coating gives a smooth arc and good wetting on both AC and DC+, which helps when the available welding machine on site is basic. Five diameters let the same product handle thin brackets and heavier structural joints, while the datasheet’s typical toughness of 40 J at -60 °C gives confidence for equipment exposed to cooler service conditions. The ABS approval printed on the datasheet is useful when class approval is part of the project specification.
