Selectarc UP NI625 ERNiCrMo-3 Nickel Submerged Arc Wire
Description
Alloy 625 filler wire for submerged arc joining and overlay
The Selectarc UP NI625 is a solid nickel-base wire for submerged arc welding of high-nickel alloys and special austenitic stainless steels. It is classified AWS A5.14 ERNiCrMo-3 and ISO 18274 S-Ni 6625 (NiCr22Mo9Nb), with a typical analysis of 22.2% chromium, 9.0% molybdenum and 3.4% niobium in a nickel matrix.
Selectarc highlights excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and chloride stress corrosion cracking, and high toughness at low temperature, which is why the wire is also used to weld 9% nickel steels. The main field of use given on the data sheet is equipment exposed to oxidising and corrosive attack.

Base metals: from alloy 625 to 9% nickel steel
The data sheet lists 9% nickel steel (K81340, X8Ni9, 1.5662), alloy 625 (N06625, 2.4856), alloy 825 (N08825, 2.4858), 904L (N08904, 1.4539) and the 6Mo steel 254SMo (N08926, 1.4529).
Two applications dominate in oil, gas and LNG work. The first is the construction of 9% Ni steel storage tanks for liquefied natural gas, where the nickel-base deposit provides toughness at -196 °C that no ferritic filler can match; horizontal SAW is widely used for the circumferential seams of these tanks. The second is corrosion-resistant cladding of carbon steel vessels, pipes and valve bodies with an alloy 625 layer for sour or chloride service. For manual work with the same chemistry, see the related Selectarc Ni625 electrode.
Practical points for nickel SAW
Nickel weld pools are less fluid than steel, so bevel angles should be wider and bead placement precise to avoid lack of sidewall fusion. The wire runs on DC positive within the published windows of 300 to 450 A and 27 to 32 V, at travel speeds of 40 to 60 cm/min. Final weld metal properties depend on the flux, and Selectarc names UP WP380M, UP Ni01 and UP Ni682 as partners.
On 9% Ni steel, keep heat input moderate and watch for arc blow, since the base metal can retain magnetism. For overlays, check iron dilution at the required surface depth; specifications for 625 cladding often set a maximum iron content at the finished surface, which governs the number of layers. Store the flux dry and rebake it before use as specified for that flux.

About brand
Selectarc is a French manufacturer of welding and brazing filler metals, headquartered in Grandvillars, France. Its welding activity began in 1952 with Selectarc Industrie, a plant making covered electrodes, and the business is the welding and brazing division of the family group Viellard Migeon & Compagnie. In 2025 Framatome took a 40% stake in the company.
Selectarc welding and brazing products
The welding range covers covered electrodes for carbon, low-alloy, stainless and nickel-base steels, MIG and TIG wires, flux-cored wires and hardfacing products, with brazing alloys made at the former Reboud-Roche foundry. Selectarc lists the nuclear, defence and aerospace industries among its key markets, and welding production is concentrated at its Grandvillars site, which also houses the research laboratory.
Ordering Selectarc filler metals: what we need
Give the product name, for example Selectarc Ni625, and the AWS or ISO classification in your procedure, the diameter and length, and the quantity. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, checks the grade against the Selectarc technical data sheet and can provide the data sheet and the certificates issued with the order on request.
