Hyundai Welding S-8018.B2 E8018-B2 1.25Cr-0.5Mo Electrode
Overview
The Hyundai Welding S-8018.B2 is a heat-resistant, low-alloy stick electrode classified to AWS A5.5 / ASME SFA-5.5 E8018-B2, JIS Z 3223 E5518-1CM and EN ISO 3580-A E CrMo1 B 3 2. It is an iron powder, low hydrogen type intended for 1.25 % chromium – 0.5 % molybdenum steel, the grade family widely used for elevated-temperature piping, headers and pressure vessels.
According to Hyundai Welding, it offers high efficiency, good mechanical properties and good creep resistance. Seven Star LLC supplies the Hyundai Welding S-8018.B2 to power stations, refineries, petrochemical plants and pressure equipment fabricators across Oman and the GCC from Muscat. The manufacturer datasheet is attached for download.
Chrome-Moly Welding in Brief
As general metallurgical background, chromium-molybdenum steels keep their strength and resist creep at temperatures where plain carbon steel would slowly deform. Chromium also improves resistance to oxidation and some forms of high-temperature corrosion. To keep these properties across a weld, the filler must deposit similar chemistry, which is the role of a B2 class electrode for 1.25Cr-0.5Mo base material.
These steels are hardenable, so procedures normally specify preheat, interpass temperature control and post-weld heat treatment to temper the weld and heat-affected zone. The datasheet for the Hyundai Welding S-8018.B2 reports its mechanical properties after PWHT at 690 °C for one hour, which reflects how the electrode is meant to be used. The exact preheat and PWHT cycle must come from your code and qualified procedure.
Hyundai Welding S-8018.B2 Data
Typical all-weld-metal chemistry is 0.07 % C, 0.29 % Si, 0.61 % Mn, 0.012 % P, 0.006 % S, 1.21 % Cr and 0.53 % Mo. After PWHT at 690 °C x 1 hour, typical results are 588 MPa (85 ksi) yield, 681 MPa (99 ksi) tensile and 27 % elongation. The approvals line shows ABS. Welding positions are 1G, 2F, 3G and 4G, and the polarity field reads AC, DC±.
The Hyundai Welding S-8018.B2 is offered in 2.6, 3.2, 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0 mm diameters. The two smallest sizes are 350 mm long, 4.0 and 5.0 mm are 400 mm, and 6.0 mm is 450 mm. Vertical-up and overhead currents are given only for 2.6 to 4.0 mm. Packaging is a 5 kg (11 lbs) packet, standard or vacuum, in a 20 kg (44 lbs) carton, and the redrying condition is 300 to 350 °C for 0.5 to 1 hour.

Plant Applications
Typical uses of the Hyundai Welding S-8018.B2 include high-temperature steam piping and headers in power stations, furnace and heater piping in refineries, and shells and nozzles of hydroprocessing and other pressure vessels built from 1.25Cr-0.5Mo plate and pipe. Oman’s independent power and water plants, the refinery and petrochemical complexes at Sohar and Duqm, and their maintenance shutdowns are typical places where this grade is required.

Preheat, Interpass and PWHT Planning
For 1.25Cr-0.5Mo work, general industry practice is to apply preheat across the full joint thickness before welding, keep the interpass temperature within the procedure range, and carry out PWHT soon after welding or hold the joint at an intermediate temperature until heat treatment. Local heat treatment with electric resistance or induction equipment is common on site welds of piping, while vessels may be furnace treated. Thermocouples should be attached to record the full cycle for the quality dossier.
The test condition printed on the Hyundai Welding S-8018.B2 datasheet, 690 °C for one hour, is a reference for how the published properties were obtained. A different PWHT temperature or duration will change strength and toughness, so procedure qualification tests remain essential. Hardness testing of the weld and heat-affected zone after PWHT is also widely used to confirm adequate tempering of B2 joints in refinery service.

Handling
In general, chrome-moly electrodes are even more sensitive to hydrogen than carbon steel grades because the base metal is hardenable. Keep the Hyundai Welding S-8018.B2 in sealed packs, redry at 300 to 350 °C for 0.5 to 1 hour when required, and hold electrodes in heated ovens or quivers on the job. Track heat numbers and batch certificates for traceability on pressure equipment.
On shutdown work, where several crews may be welding different alloys in the same unit, colour-coded quivers, separate ovens and a simple issue log for each electrode type help ensure that only the qualified B2 product reaches 1.25Cr-0.5Mo joints. Positive material identification of completed welds is a common final check on refinery piping.
