Selectarc Inox 316L E316L-17 Rutile Stainless Electrode

Description

Molybdenum-bearing 316L electrode with easy slag release

The Selectarc Inox 316L is a low-carbon, rutile-basic coated Cr-Ni-Mo stainless steel electrode classified AWS A5.4 E316L-17 and ISO 3581-A / EN 1600 E 19 12 3 L R 3 2. The deposit has about 8% ferrite. Selectarc points to a coating with very low moisture pick-up, soft fusion without spatter, very easy slag removal, a clean bead appearance, easy restriking and very good positional welding.

It is used for welding and cladding austenitic Cr-Ni-Mo stainless steels and clad plates, for service from -120 °C up to +400 °C. The manufacturer names the chemical and petrochemical industries, refineries, food processing and shipbuilding, for pipes, tanks and heat exchangers.

Matching base materials

The data sheet lists 316 (S31600, 1.4401), 316L (S31603, 1.4404), cast G-X5CrNiMo19-11-2 (1.4408), 316Ti (1.4571 and 1.4573) and 316Cb (1.4580 and cast 1.4581). About 2.8% molybdenum in the deposit gives the pitting resistance expected of a 316L weld in chloride-bearing or acidic process media.

The -17 classification is a rutile coating modified for AC or DC use and a flatter bead than a -16 type, which is why grades like this are popular for visible welds on food and process equipment. For lower-temperature duty, the data sheet gives 40 J at -120 °C.

Selecting the diameter and welding conditions

Five diameters are available, from 2.0 mm at 45 A for thin sheet and tube to 5.0 mm at 180 A for heavier flat passes. Weld without preheat, keep the interpass temperature below 150 °C and use a short arc. If electrodes have absorbed moisture, redry them for 1 hour at 250 °C. For clad plate, plan the buttering and filling sequence in the procedure so dilution from the carbon steel backing stays controlled.

In general, 316L filler is also used on 304L where improved pitting resistance is wanted, but not the reverse: a 308L deposit on 316L would lack molybdenum. For higher-molybdenum grades such as 317L or 904L, choose a correspondingly richer consumable. Store opened packs in dry conditions; although the coating has low moisture pick-up, damp electrodes still risk porosity and a less stable arc in positional work.

About brand
Selectarc is a French manufacturer of welding and brazing filler metals, headquartered in Grandvillars, France. Its welding activity began in 1952 with Selectarc Industrie, a plant making covered electrodes, and the business is the welding and brazing division of the family group Viellard Migeon & Compagnie. In 2025 Framatome took a 40% stake in the company. Selectarc welding and brazing products The welding range covers covered electrodes for carbon, low-alloy, stainless and nickel-base steels, MIG and TIG wires, flux-cored wires and hardfacing products, with brazing alloys made at the former Reboud-Roche foundry. Selectarc lists the nuclear, defence and aerospace industries among its key markets, and welding production is concentrated at its Grandvillars site, which also houses the research laboratory. Ordering Selectarc filler metals: what we need Give the product name, for example Selectarc Ni625, and the AWS or ISO classification in your procedure, the diameter and length, and the quantity. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, checks the grade against the Selectarc technical data sheet and can provide the data sheet and the certificates issued with the order on request.
