Selectarc B7018S E7018-1 Basic Low-Hydrogen Electrode
Description
Universal low-hydrogen electrode for highly stressed carbon steel joints
The Selectarc B7018S is a basic-coated stick electrode classified AWS A5.1 E7018-1 and ISO 2560-A E 46 4 B 3 2 H5. Selectarc describes it as a universal basic electrode with about 115% metal recovery, intended for highly stressed connections where joint security matters. The deposit keeps good toughness down to -40 °C, resists cold cracking, and the coating gives a stable arc with slag that is easy to remove.
Typical uses named by the manufacturer are frames, cases, supports, shipbuilding and pressure vessels. The H5 suffix in the ISO designation indicates a diffusible hydrogen level of no more than 5 ml per 100 g of weld metal, which is the reason basic electrodes of this type are chosen for thicker and restrained sections.

Base materials and typical work
The data sheet lists general construction steels from S185 to S355, pressure vessel plates P235 to P355 and P235GH to P265GH, cast steel GP240R, line pipe grades L210 to L360 and ship steels of quality A, B, C and D. ASTM equivalents include A285 grade C, A414 grades C to F, A442 grades 55 and 60, A515 grades 55 to 70 and A516 grades 55 to 70.
That range covers most structural fabrication, tank work and boiler or pressure vessel shells in carbon-manganese steel. The -1 suffix in E7018-1 refers to the improved impact requirement of the AWS specification, so the electrode is a reasonable choice where a procedure must show toughness at -40 °C or close to it.
Handling and welding practice
Low-hydrogen electrodes only deliver their hydrogen level when the coating is dry. Selectarc gives a redrying cycle of 2 hours at 300 °C when needed; after that, electrodes are normally kept in a heated holding oven until use. Keep a short arc, clean the joint of rust, oil and moisture, and stay below the 175 °C interpass limit stated on the data sheet.
The listed currents are nominal values for each diameter. Use 2.5 mm for roots and thin sections, 3.2 mm for most positional fill passes, and 4.0 or 5.0 mm for flat and horizontal work on heavier plate. Preheat, if any, follows from the base material, thickness and restraint in your procedure, not from the electrode alone.

About brand
Selectarc is a French manufacturer of welding and brazing filler metals, headquartered in Grandvillars, France. Its welding activity began in 1952 with Selectarc Industrie, a plant making covered electrodes, and the business is the welding and brazing division of the family group Viellard Migeon & Compagnie. In 2025 Framatome took a 40% stake in the company.
Selectarc welding and brazing products
The welding range covers covered electrodes for carbon, low-alloy, stainless and nickel-base steels, MIG and TIG wires, flux-cored wires and hardfacing products, with brazing alloys made at the former Reboud-Roche foundry. Selectarc lists the nuclear, defence and aerospace industries among its key markets, and welding production is concentrated at its Grandvillars site, which also houses the research laboratory.
Ordering Selectarc filler metals: what we need
Give the product name, for example Selectarc Ni625, and the AWS or ISO classification in your procedure, the diameter and length, and the quantity. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, checks the grade against the Selectarc technical data sheet and can provide the data sheet and the certificates issued with the order on request.
