Selectarc Inox 308B E308L-15 Basic Stainless Electrode
Description
Basic-coated 308L electrode for positional stainless work
The Selectarc Inox 308B is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel electrode with a basic coating, classified AWS A5.4 E308L-15 and ISO 3581-A / EN 1600 E 19 9 L B 4 2. The deposit contains about 8% ferrite. Selectarc highlights a stable arc, good slag removal, regular beads, good behaviour in positional welding and on poorly prepared joints, and strong mechanical properties.
It is intended for 18/8 stainless steels with service temperatures from -196 °C up to +350 °C, with tubes, tanks, heat exchangers and piping systems as the main applications.

Base materials and choosing basic over rutile
Selectarc lists UNS S30400 and S30403 (304 and 304L, 1.4301 and 1.4306), S32100 (321, 1.4541) and S34700 (347, 1.4550). The low carbon content of the deposit limits carbide precipitation, which matters for corrosion resistance of welds in 304L and stabilised grades.
The -15 suffix means a basic coating used on DC only. Compared with rutile 308L types, basic stainless electrodes usually give a convex bead and slightly harder slag, but better out-of-position control and lower sensitivity to porosity, plus better toughness at cryogenic temperatures. The impact value above 30 J at -196 °C on the data sheet supports use on low-temperature equipment in 304L.
Welding notes
Austenitic stainless steels are welded without preheat and with controlled heat input. Keep the interpass temperature below the 150 °C stated by Selectarc, use stringer beads or narrow weaves, and redry electrodes for 1 hour at 250 °C if they have picked up moisture. Clean the joint with stainless-only brushes and tools to avoid iron contamination.
The three diameters cover thin wall tube (2.5 mm at 70 A) through to medium plate (4.0 mm at 120 A). For pickling and passivation after welding, follow your corrosion specification.
For dissimilar joints between stainless and carbon steel, or for buffer layers on clad plate, a higher-alloyed 309L-type electrode is normally specified instead of 308L, because dilution from the carbon steel would otherwise leave too little chromium and nickel in the joint. Inox 308B is the choice for matching 18/8 stainless joints. Where a project requires a ferrite range, measure it on the procedure test piece with a calibrated ferritescope; the typical value from Selectarc is about 8%.

About brand
Selectarc is a French manufacturer of welding and brazing filler metals, headquartered in Grandvillars, France. Its welding activity began in 1952 with Selectarc Industrie, a plant making covered electrodes, and the business is the welding and brazing division of the family group Viellard Migeon & Compagnie. In 2025 Framatome took a 40% stake in the company.
Selectarc welding and brazing products
The welding range covers covered electrodes for carbon, low-alloy, stainless and nickel-base steels, MIG and TIG wires, flux-cored wires and hardfacing products, with brazing alloys made at the former Reboud-Roche foundry. Selectarc lists the nuclear, defence and aerospace industries among its key markets, and welding production is concentrated at its Grandvillars site, which also houses the research laboratory.
Ordering Selectarc filler metals: what we need
Give the product name, for example Selectarc Ni625, and the AWS or ISO classification in your procedure, the diameter and length, and the quantity. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, checks the grade against the Selectarc technical data sheet and can provide the data sheet and the certificates issued with the order on request.
