Overview

The Orbitalum RPG 4.5 is a portable tube squaring machine, also called a pipe end facing machine, that machines the end of a tube perfectly flat, right-angled and burr-free before welding. It processes pipes from 12.7 to 114.3 mm (0.5 to 4.5 inch) outside diameter with walls up to 3.0 mm. Orbitalum Tools explains the reasoning clearly: in manual welding, good end preparation is desirable for economic reasons, but in automated orbital welding it is required for technical reasons, because the weld head cannot compensate for an uneven or out-of-square joint.

Working Principle

A tube squaring machine works like a small lathe that comes to the pipe. In general terms, the tube is gripped in a clamping collar sized to its outside diameter, and a rotating tool holder carrying a cutting insert is fed axially against the tube end. As the tool turns, it removes a thin layer of material until the whole face is flat and square to the tube axis. On the Orbitalum RPG 4.5 the feed has a millimetre graduation so the operator can control exactly how much material is taken off, and the speed-controlled electric motor runs from 8 to 52 rpm.

The cutting tool is the multifunctional tool MFW, which has two cutting edges and a high-performance, wear-protective coating, and Orbitalum states it can be used with all machines of the RPG series. Orbitalum states that pipes of unalloyed, low-alloyed and high-alloyed steels and aluminium can be processed rapidly, economically and with high precision, giving a very high surface finish. With special tool holders the RPG 4.5 can also bevel the tube end at 20, 30, 35 or 45 degrees, which is useful when thicker walls need a weld preparation rather than a square butt.

Engineering Design of the Orbitalum RPG 4.5

The Orbitalum RPG 4.5 measures 460 × 260 × 230 mm with the drive fitted and has a machine weight of 10.5 kg, light enough to be carried to the work and used safely on site. It uses symmetrical, exchangeable clamping collars made of special steel; a click mechanism allows collars to be changed quickly and without tools, so switching from one tube size to another takes little more time than changing the pipe. The clamping length for the RPG 4.5 is 24.9 mm. Orbitalum lists a wide catalogue of collar sizes for this model, from 12.00 mm up to 114.30 mm, including common inch tube sizes such as 12.70, 19.05, 25.40, 38.10, 50.80, 63.50, 76.20, 101.60 and 114.30 mm.

The drive is rated 1,100 W, double-insulated to protection class II, and available in 230 V and 110 V versions. Machine and accessories come in a robust hard-sided transport case together with the WH tool holder, an overload fuse, a tool key set and operating instructions with spare parts list.
