Brand:

E.H. Wachs SDSF Small Diameter Split Frame Pipe Cutter

Description

A clamshell frame for cutting and prepping small-bore pipe in place

The E.H. Wachs SDSF is the smallest member of the Wachs split-frame family: an OD-mounted machine tool that cuts, bevels and counterbores pipe and tube from 0.5 to 6 in nominal size (ND12.5 to ND150). The frame splits in half so it can be positioned over inline pipe, and it is designed for simultaneous cutting and bevelling. It also serves as the rotating platform for tool slides that remove socket welds axially or radially without damaging the base material.

The machine suits low-clearance work. A self-squaring clamping system gives fast set-up, and the feed system keeps radial and axial clearance small, which matters on crowded racks and heat-exchanger or boiler connections where a full-size cutter would not fit.

Selecting the frame and slides

Order by pipe outside diameter: each frame size covers a narrow band, so the size must match the pipe actually on site. The drive is a separate choice among the pneumatic motor, the 110 V electric motor and the 220 V electric motor, and a front drive pinion housing, aluminium collet sets, clamp foot sets and a screw-down bench mount are listed as options. Standard supply is the pinion housing, storage case, hand tools and operating manuals.

Say which job the machine must do. Parting and bevelling use the parting and bevel slides, socket weld removal uses the axial or radial slides, and wheel cutting where no chips may enter the system uses the FME module. Wall thickness above 0.4375 in is outside the datasheet range and should be confirmed before ordering.

How the E.H. Wachs SDSF works

The frame splits in half and closes around the pipe. A drive motor turns the frame around the pipe. A tool block on the frame is fed in by a star wheel at each turn. The tool cuts the pipe and forms the bevel in one operation, with no need to move the pipe.

Where the SDSF is used

  • Cutting and bevelling small-bore pipe in place
  • Heat exchanger and boiler connections
  • Crowded pipe racks
  • Socket weld removal
  • Counterboring for weld preparation

Selection checklist for the SDSF

  • Pipe outside diameter
  • Wall thickness
  • Pneumatic or electric drive
  • Air or power available
  • Tool slides needed
  • Tooling material, steel or carbide
  • Clearance around the pipe
  • Size and part number

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the SDSF

Open the frame and place it around the pipe. Close it and clamp it with the self-squaring system. Fit the drive and the tool. Set the feed and start the cut. Clean and oil the machine after use and keep it in its case.

About brand

E.H. Wachs is an American maker of portable pipe cutting, bevelling and machining tools, founded in 1883 in Chicago by Edward H. Wachs as a steam fitting firm. The company later built the Wachs vertical steam engine, then moved into portable pipe machining tools and valve exercisers. Family-owned for four generations, E.H. Wachs now operates as a division of ITW (Illinois Tool Works) in Lincolnshire, Illinois.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Wachs machines for pipeline, power and process contractors in Oman and the GCC.

Milestones

  • 1883: Edward H. Wachs starts the business in Chicago.
  • 2009: The Wachs family sells the company after four generations.

E.H. Wachs product series

Split frame cutters include the SDSF small diameter split frame and the LDSF large diameter split frame for 60 to 120 in pipe. The Trav-L-Cutter SD is a portable pipe milling machine.

End prep machines include the EP 424 AutoFeed ID-mount machine and the SDB 206/2 small diameter beveller.

Split frame cutters clamp around the pipe and cut and bevel in one pass, while end prep machines mount inside the pipe to face and bevel the end. Cold cutting avoids sparks and heat, which is important in live plants and around hydrocarbons.

Machines are selected by pipe diameter and wall thickness, material and the drive power available on site.

Where E.H. Wachs machines are used
