Operating Principle

Orbitalum pipe saws use what the manufacturer calls the planetary cutting process, or flat cutting principle. The pipe is clamped and stays stationary, while the saw blade plunges into the cut and is then guided orbitally around the pipe. Orbitalum points out two advantages. First, a large pipe diameter can be cut with a small saw blade without heating the pipe, so stainless steel is not discoloured or hardened at the cut. Second, safety improves because the pipe stays still and only the tool rotates.

On the Orbitalum PS 4.5 Plus, infeed and sawing happen in a single operation, and the cut needs no reworking because it is burr-free and right-angled. The self-centering vice uses integrated reversible clamping jaws that grip at several points, preventing deformation of thin walls. A second saw blade clamping point allows pipe bends to be cut, and an integrated line laser marks the cut-off point. The rotating body and the self-centering vice are made of high-quality aluminium alloys, and robust sliding elements support a long service life. The electric version uses an air-cooled, speed-controlled single-phase AC motor with Vario-Tacho-Constamatic (VTC) electronics, a setting wheel to preselect speed from 30 to 182 rpm, a restart interlock, overload protection, cut-off carbon brushes and a carbon wear indicator; the drive can be rotated and removed. The electric machine measures 480 × 230 × 600 mm and is offered in 230 V, 110 V and 120 V, 50/60 Hz.

The battery version of the Orbitalum PS 4.5 Plus has a shorter overall length (480 × 420 × 450 mm), a brushless high-performance motor with two gears (0 to 32 rpm and 0 to 118 rpm), lithium-ion battery packs with capacity indicator, individual cell monitoring and low self-discharge, and electronic overload protection with temperature monitoring. It ships with two exchangeable batteries and a charger in 230 V or 115 V. Both versions are rated 1,100 W and protection class II and come in a hard-sided case with compartments for accessories.
