E.H. Wachs Trav-L-Cutter SD Portable Pipe Milling Machine

Description

A chain-driven milling machine that cuts and bevels in one pass

The E.H. Wachs Trav-L-Cutter SD is a portable milling machine that cuts and bevels pipe at the same time on diameters from 6 to 72 in OD (DN150 to DN1800). A tensioned mounting and drive chain holds the machine on the pipe and the machine drives itself around the circumference, which means it accepts any workpiece diameter simply by adjusting the chain length. The Trav-L-Cutter was first introduced by Wachs in 1949; the SD (Super Duty) is its fourth generation.

The SD keeps the external shape of the earlier model but has new internals: an improved feed drive with finer feed control, a heavy-duty clutch, revised chain sprockets, and a redesigned spindle gearbox with more oil capacity and cast-in cooling fins, aimed at long duty cycles in hot environments.

Controls and standard equipment

Model E and HE have separate controls for cutter on-off and feed on-off, with an interlock that prevents machine feed unless the cutter is turning, plus adjustable feed control. The hydraulic Model HE adds flow control valves, with separate adjustment of spindle speed and cutter speed, and a forward and reverse valve for travel direction. Standard equipment includes the operating manual and tools, mounting and drive chain for workpieces up to 48 in (1219 mm), connecting pins, a steel storage case and a reversible feed motor; the pneumatic version also includes a 6 ft whip hose with oiler.

Choosing the version and accessories

Choose the pneumatic Model E when a 100 cfm compressor is available and the hydraulic Model HE when a power unit delivering 13 to 15 gpm is already on site. Rates fall as wall thickness rises: the datasheet notes that walls over 1/2 in and most alloys call for reduced feed rates, and Wachs offers OEM tooling for heavy-wall and high-alloy materials.

Larger diameters than 48 in need additional chain sections, which are optional, as are extra cutter and bevel blades and a guide track with wheels (all pipe sizes up to 72 in) for vertical multi-pass or high-accuracy cuts. Specify the bevel angle needed, 30 or 37.5 degrees, and the pipe schedule so the right blade is chosen.

About brand

E.H. Wachs makes portable machine tools for cold cutting and weld preparation of pipe, tube and pressure vessels. The company dates back to 1883, works from Lincolnshire, Illinois, and is a division of ITW. It is best known for the Trav-L-Cutter pipe cutter and for its Guillotine reciprocating pipe saws. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, lists E.H. Wachs machines for contractors and plant owners who need precise end preparation on site.

E.H. Wachs product groups

The catalogue covers handheld ID-mount bevellers such as the SDB series, the EP 424 end prep machine with AutoFeed, split frames from the small SDSF through DynaPrep MDSF to the large LDSF, Trav-L-Cutter chain-mounted milling machines, Guillotine pipe saws, flange facers, casing cutters and hydraulic power units. Many machines are also offered as rentals.

Ordering Wachs machines: what we need

State the model and drive (air, hydraulic or electric), the pipe diameter and wall thickness range, the material, and the weld preparation you need, such as bevel angle, compound bevel, J-prep or counterbore. Tooling is profile-specific, so give the bevel drawing or the Wachs tooling part number.
