Orbitalum Mobile Welder Orbital Welding Power Source
Overview
The Orbitalum Mobile Welder is the entry-level model in Orbitalum’s range of orbital welding power sources. It is a portable unit designed for tube construction in thin-walled stainless steel, and Orbitalum says it lets anyone weld tubes automatically, anywhere, with minimal training. The Orbitalum Mobile Welder weighs about 15.6 kg, delivers 5 to 140 A DC, runs from single-phase 110 to 230 V supply and has the same rotary dial, touch display and soft key concept as Orbitalum’s Smart Welder series. It also offers a manual TIG mode, so one machine covers both orbital and hand welding.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Orbitalum Mobile Welder and its upgrade options to contractors, maintenance teams and fabricators in Oman and the GCC. As a trusted supplier with engineering support in Muscat, we help customers match the power source with the right gas-cooled open weld heads and accessories.
Role of the Power Source in Orbital Welding
In an orbital welding system the power source is the controller. It supplies the TIG welding current, drives the rotation of the weld head, switches the shielding gas and runs the stored weld program sector by sector around the tube. As general welding knowledge, it is this program control that makes orbital welds repeatable: once parameters have been proven for a diameter, wall and material, the same result can be reproduced on every joint.
The Orbitalum Mobile Welder makes program creation simple. Clear menu navigation lets the operator build a weld program in a few steps, supported by an integrated auto-programming function, and then start welding. Programs are kept in a welding program manager and can be exchanged via USB, and a built-in thermal printer can produce a paper record of the weld. Welding gas monitoring is included as standard.
Engineering Design of the Orbitalum Mobile Welder
Orbitalum built the Orbitalum Mobile Welder to be carried to the work. It has a carrying handle and shoulder strap, measures 264 by 540 by 376 mm, and is protected to IP23S. A foldable protective cover shields the 7 inch touch display and controls when the unit is moved around a site. The front panel carries the welding current connections, the weld head socket and the gas connection, and two USB ports are provided.
The manual welding mode of the Orbitalum Mobile Welder works with a TIG hand torch, and the user interface switches easily between orbital and manual use. Orbitalum points out that tacking and manual welds in places that orbital heads cannot reach can be done without bringing a second power source. As standard the unit is designed for gas-cooled orbital weld heads, such as Orbitalum’s open heads; liquid-cooled heads can be run after adding the ORBICOOL MW cooling unit. A wide-range input lets it run from 110 V or 230 V supplies.
Key Features
From the datasheet, the main features of the Orbitalum Mobile Welder are as follows.
- The DC control range of 5 to 140 A with 100 percent duty cycle at 140 A suits thin-walled stainless tube.
- A weight of about 15.6 kg with handle and shoulder strap makes it easy to move between work areas.
- The single-phase wide-range input accepts 110 to 230 V at 50/60 Hz.
- A 7 inch touch display, rotary knob and soft keys give simple, multilingual operation in metric or imperial units.
- Auto programming and a welding program manager speed up setup for new tube sizes.
- A built-in thermal printer and USB program exchange support weld documentation.
- The 2-in-1 design combines orbital welding with a manual TIG welding mode.
- Upgrade options add liquid cooling, data logging, digital gas management and connectivity.
Industrial Applications
Orbitalum positions its Mobile Welder for thin-walled stainless steel tube, the material used in food and beverage plants, dairies, breweries, pharmaceutical and cosmetic production, water treatment, and clean utility systems in hospitals and laboratories. In Oman and the GCC these sectors are growing around Muscat, Sohar and Salalah, and contractors installing process tubing often need a light power source that can travel to each site. For small contractors moving into orbital welding for the first time, the Orbitalum Mobile Welder offers a lower entry point, and Orbitalum also offers a Food and Beverage package combining it with an open weld head and connecting cables.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Orbitalum Mobile Welder together with the weld heads, TIG hand torch, residual oxygen meter and electrode grinder that a complete orbital setup needs. Teams that also carry out general fabrication, carbon steel welding or repair work often add conventional machines such as the ESAB Rebel EMP 285ic or the Lincoln Electric Power Wave S500, and submerged arc consumables such as LongTeng EL8 wire for heavy seams.
