High-current DC TIG with four Böhler processes

The Böhler Welding TERRA NX 400 TLH is a three-phase inverter machine for TIG DC welding with high-frequency ignition. Böhler Welding highlights a fully digital control panel with LED display, four proprietary TIG DC processes, DcDrive, DcPulse, FastPulse and EasyArc, and high welding power. The adjustment range is 3 to 400 A, which suits thick-wall pipe, boiler and pressure-vessel root and fill work where a high duty cycle matters.

The main TIG functions named in the sheet are Easy Joining, Spot Welding and Pulse Slope. Air-cooled and liquid-cooled TIG torches in the ST series are listed with the machine.

Torch and cooling choice

For manual TIG work the data sheet lists the air-cooled ST 2200 torch, rated 180 A at 35 % duty, and the liquid-cooled ST 4000, rated 350 A at 100 % duty. In both families the Standard and U/D (up/down) variants are available, as well as FX versions. For high-current work above the air-cooled rating, the liquid-cooled torch with the WU 230 cooling unit is the intended pairing. The machine itself is rated up to 100 % at 340 A at 40 degrees C, so the torch and not the power source often sets the practical duty limit.

Supply and site notes

A 25 A slow blow fuse and a 4 x 4 mm2 supply cable of 5 m are listed, with a maximum input current of 13.4 A. The data sheet gives a 0.99 cos phi value and 88 % efficiency. As with any DC TIG machine, shielding gas, tungsten type and diameter, and filler selection come from the welding procedure rather than the power source.
