Overview

The ABB Contrac RHD1250 is a compact electric rotary actuator delivering 1250 Nm of rated torque for quarter-turn valves and dampers in light-to-medium duty process applications. As the smaller-torque member of ABB’s RHD electric rotary actuator range — which spans from 50 Nm up to 16000 Nm — the RHD1250 suits ball valves, butterfly valves, and small-to-mid-size dampers that don’t require the higher torque of the RHD4000 or RHD16000.

Operating Principle

The RHD1250 converts electric motor rotation into rotary output torque, driving a valve or damper shaft between end positions in response to a control signal from its dedicated Contrac electronic unit. Its stall-proof S9-100% duty rating, per IEC 60034-1/EN 60034-1, lets the actuator hold an intermediate modulating position indefinitely without thermal derating, and rotation angle is field-configurable between 35° minimum and 270° maximum around a typical 90° quarter-turn setting.

Engineering Design of the ABB Contrac RHD1250

The RHD1250 delivers 1250 Nm of rated torque, adjustable to 0.5, 0.75, or 1.0 times rated output to match the actual valve or damper load. Travel time for a 90° stroke is adjustable from 30 to 900 seconds, with operating speed adjustable from 3.0 down to 0.1°/s for precise positioning. It is powered by 115VAC (94–130V) or 230VAC (190–260V) single-phase supply at 47.5–63Hz, housed in an IP66/NEMA 4X-rated enclosure, and operates standard across −10°C to 65°C.
