Honeywell FS10 Multi-Spectral IR Flame Detector

Description

Honeywell FS10 flame detector for paint spray booths and coating lines

The Honeywell FS10 is a multi-spectral infrared flame detector built for liquid paint and powder coating spray booths. It belongs to the Fire Sentry FS System 10 family, and the stand-alone version is the FS10-R Unitized detector, which meets the requirements of NFPA 33 for spray applications. Its job is to see a real fire fast, ignore the electrical arcs and hot surfaces common in finishing lines, and give a two-stage response so the process can be shut down before residues and wet paint ignite.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Honeywell FS10 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat. This is a specialised detector; it suits coating and finishing installations rather than general plant areas, and we confirm the application with you before quoting.

FS10 and FS10-R: the family explained

Fire Sentry FS System 10 is a complete fire detection and process control system, with an explosion-proof detector and a wall-mounted controller in a NEMA 12 enclosure. The controller has an LCD, LED status lights and three 10-amp mechanical relays to shut down paint flow, electrostatics and the conveyor, and it can operate with one or two detectors. A card controller is also available; the manufacturer asks that you consult the factory for that.

The FS10-R Unitized detector is the stand-alone version of the same technology. It operates with any approved fire alarm panel through its ALARM, ALERT and FAULT relays, so no dedicated controller is required. Make clear in the enquiry whether you need the FS10-R stand-alone detector or the System 10 with controller.

How the FS10 recognises a fire

The sensor array continuously streams spectral data to a microprocessor, which compares what it sees against fire signatures instead of simply reacting to brightness. This is how the detector avoids false alarms from arcs and corona discharge, paint heaters and other background radiant sources, and how it can look through paint, powder or oil residue on its lens. Smoke and solvent mist in a liquid spray booth do not blind it either.

On power-up the detector runs a self-test and energises the FAULT relay to show healthy status, and an LED flashes every ten seconds in normal operation. A built-in through-the-lens test checks the optical path automatically. When a fireball-type event occurs at the spray gun, the ALERT relay operates; if the fire persists, the FIRE ALARM output is declared after about four to five seconds.

FirePic and SnapShot diagnostics

The detector stores pre-fire spectral data in non-volatile memory. FirePic lets you retrieve the recorded data from before an event, which helps investigators decide what caused it, and SnapShot gives a dynamic graphical display of what the detector sees. On the System 10 these records can be downloaded from the RS-232 port of the controller to a PC. This diagnostic record is valuable for insurers and for tuning booth practices after a nuisance trip.

Selection and ordering checklist for the FS10

  • Stand-alone FS10-R Unitized detector or System 10 with wall-mounted controller.
  • Number of detectors per booth and the required field of view coverage.
  • Sensitivity setting required; the manufacturer mentions optional factory sensitivity settings and alarm outputs.
  • Enclosure material: 316 stainless steel or copper-free powder-coated aluminium.
  • Fire alarm panel or process controller that will take the ALARM, ALERT and FAULT relays.
  • Mounting: fixed or with the optional swivel bracket.
  • Spare electronics module; the listing names an electronics module for the FS10-R30 series.

Installation and maintenance of the FS10

Position each detector so the 90 degree cone covers the spray area, application zones and any points where residue builds up, and fix it firmly with the bracket aimed correctly. Wire 24 VDC and the relay circuits using the two 3/4 in NPT entries, and test that the FAULT relay shows healthy status after power-up. The detector is intended for indoor use only, per the manufacturer.

Maintenance mostly means keeping the window clean enough for the automatic lens test to pass, checking relay actions against the booth shutdown logic, and periodically exercising the system with a suitable test source. Review the stored events regularly; a pattern of ALERT events can reveal a spray gun or process problem long before a real fire.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

The manufacturer lists liquid paint spray lines, aerosol filling, powder coating booths and curing ovens as indoor applications. In Oman and the Gulf these appear in vehicle and equipment refinishing shops, steel fabrication and structural coating plants, furniture and aluminium joinery finishing, and pipe and valve coating lines at industrial estates. High ambient temperatures and dust inside factory buildings make a clean lens and a protected enclosure important.

About brand

Honeywell is the American industrial technology group whose products on this site cover gas and flame detection, pressure transmitters, flow measurement, gas metering, fire alarm systems and helicopter rotor balancing equipment. Its roots go back to a thermostat business in Minneapolis in 1885 and to Mark Honeywell's heating company, which merged with it in 1927. Several brands we list have joined Honeywell over the years: Gent fire systems of Leicester (part of Honeywell since 2005), Chadwick-Helmuth (a Honeywell business unit from 2002) and Elster gas metering (acquired around the end of 2015).

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Honeywell gas detectors and sensors, transmitters, Elster gas meters and flow computers, Gent fire alarm equipment and Chadwick-Helmuth balancers, and supply them and their spares in Oman and the GCC by part number.

Gas detection uses two basic approaches. Point detectors such as the Sensepoint XCD measure the gas at one location, with a catalytic or infrared sensor for flammable gas and an electrochemical cell for toxic gas such as H2S. Open path detectors such as the Searchline Excel send an infrared beam across an area up to a few hundred metres long and detect a gas cloud anywhere along it. Infrared sensors cannot be poisoned the way catalytic beads can, which matters on sites with silicones or H2S.

Where Honeywell products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Honeywell gas detectors protect wellheads, gas plants, refineries and tank farms. Elster meters and flow computers measure gas at city gate stations and in industry. Gent systems are installed in commercial buildings, hospitals and hotels, and Chadwick-Helmuth balancers are used by helicopter operators.

Ordering Honeywell products: what we need

Send the part number from the label (for example 02104-N-XSSA or SPXCDASMTXF). For gas detectors, add the gas, range, output and certification. For gas meters, add size (DN), flow range and pressure rating. For Gent equipment, add the panel type and loop protocol.

Facts checked against Honeywell press releases and SEC filings, and published histories of Gent and Chadwick-Helmuth, October 2026.
