Yokogawa TDLS8000 Tunable Diode Laser Gas Analyzer

Description

Overview of the Yokogawa TDLS8000

The Yokogawa TDLS8000 is an in-situ tunable diode laser spectrometer for real-time gas analysis in combustion and process applications. It measures oxygen, carbon monoxide, methane, carbon dioxide, ammonia, moisture, hydrogen sulphide and hydrogen chloride directly across a stack, duct or process line, without sample extraction or conditioning. The non-contacting sensor works in corrosive, abrasive and condensing gases at temperatures up to 1,500 °C, and Yokogawa describes this second-generation platform as having improved reliability and easier installation and maintenance than the first.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Yokogawa TDLS8000 to refineries, gas processing plants, petrochemical complexes, power stations and cement and steel producers in the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. As a trusted supplier with engineering support in Muscat, we work with process engineers on the application data sheet, optical path, purge arrangement and hazardous-area approval so the analyzer is specified correctly from the start.

Measuring Principle

In the Yokogawa TDLS8000, a near-infrared tunable diode laser in the laser unit is scanned across a narrow absorption line of the target gas, and the beam passes through the process to the detector in the sensor control unit on the opposite side. The amount of light absorbed at that wavelength is proportional to the gas concentration along the path. Yokogawa’s TruePeak technique integrates the whole area of the absorption peak rather than its height, so the result stays accurate and free of interference when pressure, temperature and background gas composition change. Process temperature and pressure can be fed in through two 4–20 mA analog inputs for compensation.

An internal reference cell in the laser module locks the laser to the correct absorption peak, which allows stable measurement of low concentrations. An 8-stage auto-gain adapts the detector to large variations in transmission caused by dust or particles. Because the line-of-sight measurement averages the whole cross-section, the Yokogawa TDLS8000 does not miss local temperature or concentration stratification, and the absence of sample lines gives a typical response of 2 to 5 seconds.

Engineering Design of the Yokogawa TDLS8000

The Yokogawa TDLS8000 system consists of a laser unit and a sensor control unit installed opposite each other on alignment flanges, joined by a unit connection cable and powered from 24 V DC. Both units have aluminium alloy cases rated IP66 and Type 4X, weigh about 8 kg each, and carry a local display: a 128 × 64 dot LCD with status LEDs on the sensor control unit and a 7-segment transmission display on the laser unit to simplify optical alignment. Wetted materials are 316 stainless steel, BK-7 glass and encapsulated FKM, and purge connections keep the optics and process windows clean.

For the Yokogawa TDLS8000, the optional YH8000 HMI adds a 7.5-inch colour touchscreen in ten languages and can operate up to four analyzers at once. The modular design allows the laser module and other components to be replaced on site without calibration, and the analyzer stores 50 days of data and spectra for diagnosis. For difficult processes, Yokogawa offers the IF8000 isolation flange, the YC8000 flow cell for extractive measurement and calibration cells for offline validation.

Industrial Applications

Yokogawa highlights fired heater combustion control with O2 and CO + CH4 measurement, oxygen monitoring for safety in vapour recovery and vacuum distillation columns, NH3 slip in flue gas, and trace moisture in electrolysis plants. These Yokogawa TDLS8000 duties are directly relevant to the Sultanate of Oman: refinery heaters and reformers in Sohar and Duqm, gas processing and LNG facilities, flare and vapour recovery units, and gas turbine and boiler flue gas at independent power and water plants. On fired heaters, fast in-situ O2 and CO measurement allows tighter excess-air control, improving efficiency and reducing emissions while protecting tubes.

Steel, aluminium and cement producers in the Sohar industrial area can also use the Yokogawa TDLS8000 for CO and O2 monitoring in furnaces and coal mills, where dust and high temperature make sample systems difficult to maintain. Seven Star LLC supplies the analyzer from Muscat together with related Yokogawa equipment, including the Yokogawa E7042UD zirconia cell assembly kit for existing oxygen analyzers, the Yokogawa ProSafe-RS safety instrumented system and the Yokogawa FLXA21 analyzer for liquid analysis.

About brand
Yokogawa instruments are ordered by model and suffix code, a string such as EJX110A followed by option characters that fix span, materials and approvals. Founded in 1915 and headquartered in Tokyo, Yokogawa makes field instruments, process analyzers and the CENTUM control system used in refineries, gas plants and power stations. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Yokogawa pressure transmitters, flowmeters, temperature transmitters, analyzers and CENTUM I/O modules for users in Oman and the GCC.

Yokogawa product families on this page

Pressure is covered by the DPharp transmitters: the EJX110A differential pressure transmitter, the EJX530A and EJA530E in-line gauge pressure transmitters and the EJX910A multivariable transmitter. The ADMAG AXW is the magnetic flowmeter line, and the YTA610 and YTA710 are temperature transmitters. Analyzers include the FLXA402 four-wire and FLXA21 two-wire liquid analyzers, the TDLS8000 tunable diode laser gas analyzer and spare parts for zirconia oxygen analyzers, such as the E7042UD cell assembly kit for the ZR22 detector. Control hardware includes CENTUM VP I/O modules like the ADV161 digital input module and the YS1700 programmable indicating controller.

Where Yokogawa instruments are used

EJA and EJX transmitters measure pressure, level and DP flow throughout oil and gas, chemical and power plants. Zirconia oxygen analyzers and the TDLS8000 are used for combustion control on boilers and fired heaters. FLXA analyzers monitor pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen in water and process streams, and CENTUM modules are bought as replacements for running control systems.

Ordering Yokogawa parts: what we need

Send the model and suffix code and the serial number from the nameplate, and for CENTUM modules the style code as well. For transmitters without a code we need span, output protocol, wetted materials, process connection, housing and the approval required. For oxygen analyzer spare parts give the detector and converter models, for example ZR22G and ZR402G, and the part number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which gases can the Yokogawa TDLS8000 measure?
According to the general specifications, the TDLS8000 measures O2, CO, CO or CH4, CO2, CO + CO2, H2O, NH3, H2S and HCl in combustion exhaust gas and process gas. Oxygen ranges run from 0–1 % up to 0–25 %, ppm CO from 0–200 ppm up to 0–10,000 ppm, and other gases can be evaluated by Yokogawa on request.
How fast and how far can the TDLS8000 measure?
Response is typically 2 to 5 seconds, with 1 second as an option. The standard optical path between the laser unit and the sensor control unit is 0.5 to 6 m depending on the application, extending to 30 m with the optional Large Aperture Optics, or 25 m in flameproof Zone 1/Div 1 installations.
