AMETEK Thermox TM2000 Trace Oxygen Analyzer

Description

Overview

The AMETEK TM2000 is a trace and percent level net oxygen analyzer from the Thermox product line of AMETEK Process Instruments. It protects industrial processes by responding quickly to changes in oxygen concentration using an industry-proven zirconium oxide (ZrO2) sensor. AMETEK states that the analyzer operates over a wide range from 0.1 ppm to 100 percent O2 and can respond from atmosphere to low ppm oxygen levels in just seconds. A distinctive capability of the AMETEK TM2000 is that it can detect excess combustibles upsets in the presence of very low ppm oxygen readings, which matters in cryogenic gas generation where the analyzer must distinguish an oxygen upset from an excess combustibles upset.

Seven Star LLC supplies the AMETEK TM2000, its controller options and spare parts to industrial gas producers, nitrogen generation and air separation plants, refineries, petrochemical units, heat treatment shops and electronics and specialty gas users in Oman and the GCC. We help confirm the range, sample conditions and enclosure, and we provide model selection support from Muscat.

Key Benefits of the AMETEK TM2000

  • Modular design for easy upgrades and field service.
  • Process protection: the ZrO2 sensor will not fail to a zero O2 reading, according to AMETEK, so a sensor problem is not mistaken for an ultra-pure product.
  • Optional sample bypass: improves response time and keeps the sensor inlet purged of dead volume.
  • System integration: RS-485 serial communications, 0-20 or 4-20 mA current outputs and digital alarms.
  • Separable controller: the Series 2000 controller can be housed separately from the sensor.

Sensor Performance

The AMETEK TM2000 sensor operates from 0.1 ppm O2 to 100 percent O2. Accuracy in the percent range is ±1 percent of reading or 0.02 percent O2 absolute, whichever is greater, and in the ppm range ±2 percent of reading or 0.5 ppm O2 absolute, whichever is greater. Repeatability is ±0.5 percent of reading or 0.1 percent O2 absolute in the percent range and ±0.5 percent of reading or 0.1 ppm absolute in the ppm range. Response is less than five seconds at 0.6 L/min (1.3 scfh) over one decade. Sample flow is 0.1 to 1.0 L/min, maximum inlet temperature 71°C, and sensor ambient temperature −18 to 50°C. The sensor unit runs on 115 VAC (230 VAC optional) at 288 VA and is housed in an indoor/outdoor NEMA 3R enclosure.

AMETEK TM2000 calibration uses a zero gas between 0.1 ppm and 10 percent O2 in nitrogen and a span gas at least one decade above the zero gas. This two-point approach lets the analyzer be calibrated close to the actual measuring range, which is important for trace oxygen applications.

Series 2000 Controller

The AMETEK TM2000 controller has a four-line by 20-character vacuum fluorescent display that shows O2 from 0.1 ppm to 100 percent with autoranging, plus time and date, cell temperature, user text, thermocouple mV or cell mV. Password protection, programmable pressure compensation and context-sensitive help are included. Two isolated linear current outputs can be assigned to O2, cell temperature, thermocouple mV or cell mV, each configurable as 4-20, 0-20, 20-4 or 20-0 mA, fully scalable, with hold or track during calibration and selectable damping (maximum load 1200 ohms). Two independent O2 alarms can be set high or low, and contacts are rated 0.5 A, 30 V, 10 VA non-inductive. Diagnostics include a watchdog timer, service alarms, system tests for A/D, RAM, EEPROM and keypad, and a 20-entry exception log. Communications are RS-485, two-way addressable.

The standard controller enclosure is weatherproof NEMA 4 (IP 56) for wall or panel mounting. General purpose wall, 19 in. rack and panel versions, and a stainless steel NEMA 4X (IP 56) version, are also offered, all UL listed for NEC Class I, Division 2 areas, and purged and explosion-proof versions are available. The controller operates from −10 to 50°C on 115-230 VAC.

Applications

  • Cryogenic gas generating systems and air separation units.
  • Nitrogen purity systems, including on-site generators.
  • Blanket gas and inert gas purity monitoring.
  • Welding atmospheres and atmospheric oven control.
  • Glove box applications.
  • Specialty, bulk and ultra-high-purity gas production.

For combustion control on heaters and boilers, AMETEK offers the in-situ Thermox WDG-V flue gas oxygen analyzer, while moisture in process and natural gas is covered by the AMETEK 3050-OLV and the AMETEK 5100HD.

Sample System Considerations (General Guidance)

This is general practice rather than AMETEK data. Trace oxygen measurement is easily disturbed by air leaks, so use stainless steel tubing and leak-tight fittings, minimize dead volume and avoid permeable plastic tubing. Keep the sample flow within the specified range and below the maximum inlet temperature. Use the optional sample bypass to shorten response time on long sample lines, and purge the system thoroughly after maintenance before trusting low ppm readings from the AMETEK TM2000.

Why Zirconia for Trace Oxygen (General Guidance)

This section is general background rather than AMETEK data. A heated zirconium oxide cell produces a voltage that depends on the ratio of oxygen partial pressure in the sample to that in the reference air, so a single sensor can cover many decades from ppm levels up to percent levels. Because the cell is hot, any combustible gases in the sample react with the available oxygen, and the AMETEK TM2000 therefore reports net oxygen. In nitrogen and inert gas production this behaviour is useful, since a sudden excess of combustibles shows up as a distinct signature rather than being hidden. Operators choosing the AMETEK TM2000 should still confirm that the sample does not contain components that could damage the cell, and should use the controller diagnostics to watch cell health over time.

About brand
Process analyzers for sulfur recovery, moisture and combustion are the AMETEK products most often requested by gas plants and refineries. AMETEK, a US instrument manufacturer founded in 1930 and based in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, sells them under names such as Western Research, Thermox and Drexelbrook. Seven Star LLC lists AMETEK gas analyzers, analyzer spare parts and level transmitters, and sources them for process plants in Oman.

AMETEK analyzers and parts listed

The AMETEK products on this page include:
  • 5100HD and the transportable 5100P: tunable diode laser (TDLAS) analyzers, used for example for moisture in natural gas
  • 3050-OLV: process moisture analyzer, with spare boards such as 305110902S
  • Thermox WDG-V: flue gas oxygen analyzer for combustion control
  • Western Research 900 air demand analyzer and 930 analyzer for H2S in sulfur pits
  • Drexelbrook RCT-1210 RF level transmitter
  • Spare parts: PCB assemblies, a protected gold mirror and hollow cathode lamps

Where AMETEK analyzers are used

The 900 air demand analyzer sits on the tail gas of a Claus sulfur recovery unit and measures H2S and SO2 so the air to the reaction furnace can be trimmed. The 930 watches the vapor space of the sulfur pit. Moisture analyzers such as the 3050-OLV and 5100HD serve gas dehydration, pipeline and LNG feed gas, and the Thermox WDG-V measures excess oxygen on fired heaters and boilers. These duties are common in gas processing and refining across the GCC.

Ordering AMETEK analyzers and spares: what we need

For spare parts, send the AMETEK part number, the analyzer model and its serial number. Boards and optical parts change with analyzer revision, and the serial number lets the build be checked in the manufacturer's records. For a new analyzer we need the stream composition, the component and range to be measured, sample pressure and temperature, area classification, power supply, outputs and whether a sample system or shelter is included. For Drexelbrook level transmitters give the full model number, the probe length and the process material.
