Delta DTM Multi-Loop Modular Temperature Controller

Description

Delta DTM multi-loop modular temperature controller series

The Delta DTM is a multi-channel modular temperature controller built for applications with many heating zones. A DTM installation is assembled from a host, measurement modules, I/O extension modules and extension cassettes. A fully extended group has one host, seven measurement modules and eight I/O extension modules and can control up to 64 temperature points. Seven Star LLC supplies the DTM in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

Several DTM groups can be linked over RS-485 or Ethernet for installations of more than 1,000 points. Data collection is carried out by the host, which Delta states improves communication speed and stability, and complete isolation between channels protects the measurements from interference.

Parts of a DTM system

The page names the host, measurement modules and I/O modules and refers to a measurement module coded DTMN02-x. Exact ordering codes depend on module type, so send the codes from your drawing rather than the series name alone.

How the DTM architecture works

The host is the communication hub of a DTM group. It collects measurement and output data from the attached modules and exchanges it with a PLC, HMI or supervisory system. Measurement modules read the temperature sensors and run the control loops, while I/O extension modules provide additional outputs and signals. Because the host performs the data collection, the supervisory system does not have to poll every module individually.

The groups of up to 64 points can be repeated and joined using RS-485 or Ethernet, so a plant with many presses, extruders or ovens can be tied into one monitoring network. The ability to set communication addresses freely helps when new groups are added to an existing network that already uses an address plan.

Where the DTM fits and related Delta controllers

Delta offers three families that are often compared. The DT3 is a single-loop panel-mount controller. The DTM is the modular multi-loop family described here. The DTN is a slimmer, economical multi-loop family that adds EtherCAT and Modbus TCP / EtherNet/IP options. If your project needs only a handful of independent loops, the DT3 may be simpler; if it needs dozens of zones with central data collection, the DTM or DTN is more suitable.

Delta HMIs such as the DOP-300 S can act as the operator interface for a DTM system over Modbus.

When to prefer DTM

The DTM is a good choice when you need isolated channels, flexible module combinations and user-defined communication addresses on a multi-zone machine.

DTM selection and ordering checklist

  • Total number of control loops and the number of groups needed.
  • Sensor types and temperature ranges for each measurement module.
  • Number and type of outputs (control, alarm, retransmission) to size the I/O extension modules.
  • Communication: RS-485 or Ethernet, and the master (PLC, HMI or SCADA).
  • Address plan for hosts and modules.
  • Cabinet space: check the dimensions of the host, measurement module and I/O module on the dimension drawings.
  • Supply and sensor wiring requirements.

Installation and maintenance of the DTM

Plan the cabinet layout so that the host and modules can be connected in the required order, then wire sensors module by module. Keep sensor cables separate from heater power cables and use proper thermocouple extension cable. Label each channel clearly against the zone it controls, since a large group can contain dozens of loops.

During commissioning, set up communication addresses, verify each channel against a calibrated reference, and tune loops zone by zone. Save the configuration. If a module has to be replaced during maintenance, the modular design allows swapping one unit without disturbing the rest of the group, but check that the replacement module has the same code.

DTM applications in Oman and the GCC

Delta lists food packaging, rubber and plastics, and electronics as typical applications. In Oman and the GCC a multi-zone controller is useful in plastic extrusion and injection moulding, packaging machinery, heat treatment and lab or pilot plant equipment. High ambient temperature and dust make cabinet ventilation and clean wiring important.

Planning a DTM network for a multi-zone plant

Start from the zone list. Each zone needs a sensor, a control output and, usually, an alarm. Group zones by physical location so that sensor cables stay short and one cabinet serves one machine. Then decide how the groups will talk to the supervisory level: RS-485 is simple and economical for a few groups close together, while Ethernet is better when groups are spread over a large building or when the data rate matters.

Because every group has its own host collecting data, the supervisory system sees one device per group rather than dozens of modules. Document the address of each host and the module order inside the group; this documentation saves hours during fault finding. Keep a spare measurement module and a spare I/O module per site if a stoppage is costly, since the same module codes can be exchanged between groups of identical configuration.

About brand

Delta Electronics is a Taiwanese maker of power and automation products, founded in April 1971 by Bruce Cheng with 15 employees in a small factory in Sinjhuang, Taipei County. Its first products were TV deflection coils and electronic components; it later became a leading maker of switching power supplies and added drives, PLCs and HMIs for industrial automation. Delta is headquartered in Neihu, Taipei, and listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange.

Seven Star LLC lists the Delta DVP04AD-S2 analog input module and the ESR-48/30D rectifier module, and sources Delta PLC modules and power parts for panel builders and maintenance teams in Oman and the GCC.

Delta PLC families and the DVP slim line

Delta's controller program runs from the DVP series through the modular AS series to the AH series. Inside the DVP series, the slim CPUs (among them DVP-SS2, SA2, SX2, SV2 and SE) take slim expansion modules on their right side. The DVP04AD-S2 is one of these: a four-channel analog input module for voltage or current signals, which the CPU reads with FROM and TO instructions.
