Delta C2000 Plus High Performance Vector Control Drive

Overview

The Delta C2000 Plus is the high performance vector control drive in the Delta Electronics AC motor drive range. It provides precise speed, torque and position control for both sensor and sensorless operation of synchronous and asynchronous motors, and it is aimed at heavy duty and constant torque machinery in production, processing, food, chemical, metal working, rubber and plastics, and municipal infrastructure. Compared with the earlier C2000 series, the Delta C2000 Plus raises the 460 V power range to 560 kW and adds a higher overload capacity, which lets one drive platform cover small auxiliary motors and large process motors on the same plant.

Operating Principle

Like any modern variable frequency drive, the Delta C2000 Plus rectifies the incoming three-phase supply into a DC bus and then uses an IGBT inverter to synthesise an output of variable voltage and frequency. What separates a vector drive from a basic V/f drive is the control model running in the processor. In field-oriented control the drive separates motor current into a flux component and a torque component and regulates each independently, much like a DC drive, so torque can be held accurately at very low speed. The catalogue lists IMFOC with encoder feedback at 200 percent starting torque at 0 Hz and a speed control range of 1:1000, while sensorless IMFOC reaches 200 percent at 0.5 Hz with a 1:100 range.

For permanent magnet motors the drive runs PMFOC with encoder or sensorless PM control, and for interior permanent magnet and synchronous reluctance motors it offers dedicated sensorless modes. Torque control modes are also available, with a published torque accuracy of plus or minus 5 percent with encoder feedback and plus or minus 15 percent sensorless. The practical result is that the same Delta C2000 Plus can run a winder in torque mode, a positioning axis with homing and multi-point positioning, or a simple pump in V/f mode, with the mode chosen by parameter.

Engineering Design of the Delta C2000 Plus

The Delta C2000 Plus is built in frame sizes A to H. Frames A to C are IP20 with a removable top cover, while frame D0 and above can be ordered with a conduit box for IP20 and UL Type 1 or without it for IP00 cabinet mounting. Operating temperature is minus 10 to 50 degrees Celsius for IP20 open type installations and minus 10 to 40 degrees Celsius with the top cover or conduit box fitted. Circuit boards are coated, a DC reactor and EMC filter are built into many ratings, and the brake chopper is integrated in the smaller frames. Delta describes the design as modular: the LCD keypad is hot pluggable, cooling fans are removable, and the control section accepts I/O extension cards, encoder (PG) feedback cards and fieldbus cards.

The standard LCD keypad shows several values at once, includes a start wizard, real-time clock and multi-language display, and can copy parameters and PLC programs to move a configuration from one drive to the next. Application groups for AHU, fan, pump and compressor duty shorten commissioning. The drive also carries a built-in PLC with 10k steps of program capacity and Safe Torque Off certified by TUV Rheinland to IEC 61508 SIL CL2 and EN ISO 13849-1 Category 3 PL d, which reduces the external relays a panel would otherwise need.

Industrial Applications

In Oman the Delta C2000 Plus fits the heavy, constant torque duties that are common in mining and cement plants around Sohar and Duqm, in steel and aluminium downstream processing, and in plastics extrusion and packaging lines inside the industrial estates of Rusayl, Nizwa and Salalah. Its high starting torque and super heavy duty overload suit crushers, mixers, ball mills and long belt conveyors, while torque control and positioning functions cover winders, cranes and transfer machines. For water and wastewater networks the pump and compressor application groups simplify set-up on lift stations and blowers.
