WIKA TC82 High-Temperature Thermocouple with Purge
Description
WIKA TC82 high-temperature thermocouple with purge connection
The WIKA TC82 is a high-temperature thermocouple designed for hazardous process duty, above all sulphur recovery units and other reactors where toxic gas must not leak out and the thermocouple must not be poisoned. It uses a ceramic or silicon-carbide protection tube, with or without a second inner tube, and offers an optional flushing (purge) connection so a clean gas can be run through the tube to prolong life. WIKA states high process safety for processes up to 1,700 °C. Seven Star LLC supplies the TC82 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat; the tables below help you specify tube material, head and options.
Why the TC82 exists
In sulphur recovery and some chemical or petrochemical reactors, normal protection tubes fail early from thermal shock and from attack by process gas, and every unplanned stop is expensive. The TC82 combines a hermetically sealed junction, which keeps toxic media in the reactor, with a high-quality ceramic or silicon-carbide tube and an optional purge system. The datasheet lists a high variety of thermowell and protection tube materials, plus versions with a temperature transmitter or field transmitter.

Tube selection: ceramic or silicon carbide
The materials table lets you match the tube to the atmosphere. C799 and C530 ceramics are listed to 1,600 °C, C610 to 1,500 °C, and Hexoloy silicon carbide to 1,650 °C as an outer tube. Silicon carbide handles thermal shock better, but its choice should consider the gas chemistry. Keep in mind that the upper operating temperature in air up to 1,700 °C applies to the ceramic tube and that other process gases lower it. For a thermocouple of type R, S or B in a hydrogen-containing or sulphur-containing gas, the inner tube is what keeps the noble metal from being attacked, so do not omit it when the process asks for it.
Purge system and process safety
A purge connection of ¼ NPT lets a clean gas flow around the thermocouple so process gas cannot reach the wires, which is why WIKA says it prolongs life. The sealing between the tube and the head is designed to prevent toxic media from escaping the reactor if a tube cracks. The pressure limit of 1.5 bar means that this thermometer is for low-pressure furnace and reactor service; for high-pressure reactors, the TC84 is the relevant model.
Explosion protection options
The datasheet lists flameproof Ex db for zone 1 (II 2/-G Ex db IIC T6 … T1 Gb/-) and intrinsically safe Ex ia for gas and dust in zone 21, with IECEx equivalents and other country options. Always confirm which head, which approval and which gland are combined in your specification.
Installation and operation
- Heat up and cool down at the controlled rate recommended for the ceramic tube
- Support the tube in the correct orientation and avoid side load on the flange
- Set the purge flow and pressure as per your process engineering, and monitor the purge supply
- Use extension or compensating cable that matches the thermocouple type, or a head transmitter
- Plan periodic replacement and a spare tube set based on the process life seen so far
Applications in Oman and the GCC
The TC82 is a fit for sulphur recovery units at gas-processing plants and refineries, thermal reactors, and chemical and petrochemical units with high-temperature hazardous process gas. Regional gas plants with high hydrogen sulphide levels are a natural application, where reactor shutdowns for thermocouple replacement are costly.

About brand
WIKA is the German manufacturer of pressure, temperature, level and flow instruments, best known for its pressure gauges. Alexander Wiegand and Philipp Kachel founded it on 2 January 1946 in Klingenberg am Main, Bavaria. The name comes from the first two letters of their surnames. WIKA is still run by the Wiegand family and is headquartered in Klingenberg.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list WIKA pressure gauges, diaphragm seals, transmitters, switches, thermometers and thermowells, and supply them to plants, contractors and panel builders in Oman and the GCC by model and order code.

The WIKA model number tells you the build. In 232.50, the first digit 2 means stainless steel wetted parts, the second digit 3 means a liquid-fillable case, and ".50" is the case style. The 111 series uses copper alloy wetted parts and suits water and air. Where the medium is corrosive, very hot or would block the gauge, a diaphragm seal such as the 990.27 keeps it away from the Bourdon tube. For temperature, a thermowell like the TW10 lets you remove the sensor without opening the process.
Where WIKA instruments are used
In Oman and the GCC, WIKA gauges, transmitters and thermometers are used in oil and gas, refining and petrochemical plants, power and desalination, water networks, district cooling and HVAC, and on skids and machines from OEMs.
Ordering WIKA instruments: what we need
