AMETEK Land UNO Standalone Infrared Thermometer

Description

AMETEK Land UNO standalone infrared thermometer

UNO is a standalone non-contact infrared thermometer from AMETEK Land, built for OEM machines, plant designers and process operators who want a temperature signal without a separate processor. Power it up and it gives a 4 to 20 mA output that is linear over its temperature range. It is offered as a through-the-lens sighting thermometer or as a fibre-optic version with optional laser targeting. Seven Star LLC supplies the UNO range in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

The model code carries the detector family and the span. In “U1 600/1600C” the letter-digit pair is the waveband type (U1 for 1 µm, U2+ for 1.6 µm, U4 for 2.4 µm, U6+ for 3 to 5 µm, V1 for the 0.85 to 1.1 µm ratio type), the numbers are the lower and upper limit, and C or F gives the unit. A trailing V or S refers to focus version, and “YL” or “CYL” marks a fibre-optic version in which Y indicates laser targeting.

How UNO measures and conditions the signal

UNO detects the infrared radiation from the target and converts it to a 4 to 20 mA signal within the thermometer itself. Two built-in time functions are available. The peak picker reports the highest temperature seen, which is the correct reading for intermittent targets or a hot object partly hidden by cooler areas. The averager smooths spurious fluctuation. Because there is no contact, nothing touches or contaminates the product, which is the manufacturer’s reason for recommending it for fast-moving, small, fragile or controlled-atmosphere products.

Where UNO fits compared with other Land thermometers

UNO uses the same optical families as System 4 but is a standalone loop device, so no Landmark processor is needed. When several thermometers need to be shown together, or alarms and maths functions are wanted, a System 4 thermometer with a Landmark LMG MkII or Technic processor is the better route. When digital configuration, Ethernet or RS485 is wanted, SOLOnet is the digital alternative. Mountings and protection accessories are offered for mechanical and thermal protection of the UNO body.

Selecting a UNO model

  • Surface and temperature: pick the waveband first (1 µm for hot metal, 2.4 µm for lightly oxidised metal, 3 to 5 µm for low temperatures), then the span.
  • Target size: compare the minimum target diameter at the working distance; a 200:1 optic is for small targets.
  • Ratio V1 type: where emissivity changes or part of the view is obscured.
  • Focus: V for 500 mm and beyond, S for 350 mm to 1 m, or fibre head A10, A25 or A50.
  • Fibre optic or standard: use fibre where the electronics must be away from heat or magnetic fields.
  • Time function: peak picker or averager setting for the process.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance

Mount the thermometer in a protective jacket or bracket and aim it with the through-the-lens sight or the laser, then set focus for the target distance. Connect a 24 V loop supply and a 4 to 20 mA input; check polarity and loop resistance before power-up. Compare the reading with a reference once and write down emissivity and time-function settings. Keep the lens clean and use air purge in dusty areas. Quick-start guides are published by the manufacturer for U2+ and U6+ versions and for fibre-optic versions.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

For OEM equipment exported to the region and for plant in Oman, UNO is a practical fit on glass lines, hydrocarbon-processing heaters and process equipment, minerals processing and heat-treatment lines where a simple 4 to 20 mA reading is enough. The heat and dust of the Gulf make purge air, a rugged sealed body and a correctly specified ambient limit important in the specification.

About brand

AMETEK is the American maker of electronic instruments and electromechanical devices, headquartered in Berwyn, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1930 as American Machine and Metals. In process industries it is known through brands such as Western Research (sulfur recovery and H2S analysers), Thermox (oxygen analysers), Land (pyrometers), Drexelbrook (RF level) and Chandler Engineering.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list AMETEK process analysers, pyrometers, portable testers and spare parts, and supply them to gas plants, refineries and power stations in Oman and the GCC.

AMETEK company profile

Established 1930, USA, as American Machine and Metals; later renamed AMETEK
Headquarters Berwyn, Pennsylvania
Structure Two groups: Electronic Instruments (EIG) and Electromechanical (EMG)
Process brands Western Research, Thermox, Land, Drexelbrook, Chandler Engineering, Ranarex

Milestones

  • 1930: American Machine and Metals is formed in March and listed on the New York Stock Exchange as AME.
  • Early 1960s: The company is renamed AMETEK.
  • 2021: AMETEK acquires Magnetrol.

AMETEK products we list

Product Type Typical use
888, 900, 930 Western Research sulfur recovery analysers Tail gas, air demand and H2S in sulfur pits on Claus units
931, 933, 9900RM/WM UV gas analysers H2S in natural gas and multi-component process streams
5000, 3050-OLV, 5100HD, 5100P Moisture analysers Water content in natural gas and process gases; the 5100 models use TDLAS
241CE II, Chanscope II / Model 13 Dew point analysers and testers Hydrocarbon and water dew point of natural gas
WDG 1200/1210, WDG-V, TM2000 Thermox oxygen analysers Combustion control on heaters and boilers, and trace oxygen
SPOT+, Cyclops L Land pyrometers Non-contact temperature of furnaces, kilns, tubes and hot metal
120HD, Ranarex, Drexelbrook RCT-1210 Portable analysers and level Hydrogen purity in generators, gas specific gravity, RF level measurement

Most of these analysers work on light absorption. UV analysers such as the 933 and 9900 measure H2S and SO2 by their absorption bands, and tail gas analysers use this to keep the H2S to SO2 ratio near 2:1 for the best Claus conversion. TDLAS moisture analysers use a tuned laser on a single water line, so they respond fast and do not suffer from the glycol and methanol contamination that affects sensor-based analysers.

Where AMETEK instruments are used

In Oman and the GCC, AMETEK analysers run on gas processing and sulfur recovery units, gas pipelines and custody points, refinery heaters and boilers, power station generators and steel and cement furnaces.

FAQ

Questions about the AMETEK Land UNO Standalone Infrared Thermometer

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01What output does the UNO give?
A 4 to 20 mA signal that is linear over the temperature range of the model, so it can be wired directly to a PLC or controller.
02What do the peak picker and averager do?
The peak picker reports the highest temperature, which suits intermittent targets or those partly hidden by cooler areas. The averager smooths unwanted fluctuations in the reading.
03Is a fibre-optic UNO available?
Yes. Fibre-optic UNO models use A10, A25 or A50 optical heads (100, 250 and 500 mm focus) and can have laser targeting where the model code carries Y.
04Which UNO model suits small targets?
Models with a 200:1 field of view such as U1 800/2600C and V1 1000/2600C give the smallest minimum target (2.5 mm in the V focus version), per the published table.
05When should I choose System 4 or SOLOnet instead?
Choose System 4 with a Landmark processor for multi-channel display, alarms and maths functions, and SOLOnet for digital configuration over Ethernet or RS485.
