Brand: Böhler Welding
Böhler FOX BVD 90 E9018-G Vertical-Down Pipe Electrode
Description
Higher-strength basic electrode for X70 and X80 pipe
The Böhler FOX BVD 90 is a basic-coated, low-alloy vertical-down electrode for large-diameter pipelines and structural work. Böhler lists it as AWS A5.5 E9018-G H4 R and E9045-G H4 R and EN ISO 18275-A E 55 5 Z2Ni B 4 5 H5, and names L485MB, L555MB and API 5L X70 and X80 as base materials. It is meant for filler and cover passes. As with the other FOX BVD electrodes, the deposit is described as extremely crack resistant, tough and very low in hydrogen, with start porosity avoided by the electrode design.

Where the BVD 90 sits in the FOX BVD range
Compared with the FOX BVD 85, the BVD 90 adds nickel, about 2.2 % against 0.9 %, and a higher strength class, which is why Böhler points it at X70 and X80 line pipe rather than the lower grades. The toughness figures on the data sheet run down to minus 58 °F, which is the temperature the minimum of 35 ft-lb refers to. If the project calls for an even higher grade, the FOX BVD 100 data sheet lists E10018-G for X80.
Practical use and handling
Use the electrode in the vertical-down position for filler and cover passes after the root has been made with a suitable electrode. Keep interpass temperature below 200 °F as the data sheet recommends, redry at 525 to 625 °F for at least two hours when moisture is suspected, and keep the pack sealed in storage. Pipeline contractors normally qualify the electrode in the welding procedure, so ask for the TÜV certificate and test values that match the project specification.
Mention in the enquiry if the pipeline specification asks for test values beyond those printed on the data sheet, such as sour-service SSC results or certificate type, so that the request can be checked against what Böhler can provide.
Documents and quotation
The attached Böhler data sheet shows the classifications, analysis, mechanical values and operating data. To receive a quotation, send the diameter, length and quantity, the pipe grade and wall thickness, and the certificate type required. See all welding electrodes for related products.

About brand
Böhler Welding is the welding consumables brand of voestalpine Böhler Welding, part of the voestalpine group, with a portfolio that covers stick electrodes, TIG rods, solid wires, gas-shielded and self-shielded flux-cored wires and submerged-arc wires and fluxes. The company states more than 100 years of experience. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, lists Böhler Welding consumables and welding machines, including pipeline electrodes, and sources Böhler Welding consumables for fabricators and pipeline contractors.
Böhler Welding product groups
Beyond the consumables above, Böhler Welding lists strip cladding, wire arc additive manufacturing, metal powders, arc spraying cored wires, ceramic weld backing, brazing consumables and welding automation such as orbital welding and collaborative robots. The pipeline range includes cellulosic FOX CEL electrodes and basic vertical-down FOX BVD electrodes for large-diameter line pipe.
Ordering Böhler Welding consumables: what we need
Give the product name, the AWS or EN classification, the diameter and length, and the packaging you need. For pipeline electrodes also state the pipe grade, wall thickness, welding position and whether sour-service test values are required, because the Böhler Welding data sheets note that some test values are available on request.
