Böhler FOX EAS 4 M-VD E316L-17 Vertical-Down Electrode

Description

Vertical-down E316L-17 electrode for 316L sheet and thin-wall fabrication

The Böhler FOX EAS 4 M-VD is a rutile-basic, core-wire-alloyed electrode of E316L-17 type (EN ISO 3581-A E 19 12 3 L R 1 5) for welding austenitic stainless steels such as 1.4404 and 1.4436 (316L). Its fast-freezing slag is designed for vertical-down welding in sheet-metal fabrication. Böhler Welding states that with the same electrode diameter and wall thickness it is possible to save up to 50 % of welding time compared with the vertical-up position, and that the fast travel speed and low heat input give little distortion and less risk of overheating the base metal and impairing its corrosion resistance. Maximum service temperature is 400 °C.

Base materials and selection

Base materials named include 1.4401, 1.4404, 1.4409, 1.4429, 1.4432, 1.4435, 1.4436, 1.4571, 1.4580 and 1.4583, UNS S31600, S31603, S31635, S31640 and S31653, and AISI 316L, 316Ti and 316Cb. Typical jobs are tanks, ducts, vessel shells and thin-wall pipework in food, chemical and water-treatment plants. For stabilised 321 and 347 grades the is the sibling; for duplex see the . Vertical-down is only for thin sections; thick sections and structural joints in 316L are welded vertical-up with a conventional 316L electrode.

Handling and what to confirm

Weld with stainless-only brushes and tools, keep heat input under the 2.0 kJ/mm figure and clean heat tint where corrosion resistance matters. Confirm the diameter (the data sheet lists only 2.5 and 3.2 mm), quantity, base grade and wall thickness, and the certificate type when ordering. The data sheet used here is Böhler’s global edition in millimetres.

Because the electrode is designed for thin material, keep the current inside the narrow ranges the data sheet gives, 75 to 85 A for 2.5 mm and 105 to 115 A for 3.2 mm, and hold a steady downhill travel speed so the fast-freezing slag supports the pool. The impact values stay high at low temperature, with 55 J at minus 40 °C and 32 J at minus 120 °C against a minimum of 27 J, so the deposit is not limited to ambient service.

About brand

Böhler Welding is the welding consumables brand of voestalpine Böhler Welding, part of the voestalpine group, with a portfolio that covers stick electrodes, TIG rods, solid wires, gas-shielded and self-shielded flux-cored wires and submerged-arc wires and fluxes. The company states more than 100 years of experience. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, lists Böhler Welding consumables and welding machines, including pipeline electrodes, and sources Böhler Welding consumables for fabricators and pipeline contractors.

Böhler Welding product groups

Beyond the consumables above, Böhler Welding lists strip cladding, wire arc additive manufacturing, metal powders, arc spraying cored wires, ceramic weld backing, brazing consumables and welding automation such as orbital welding and collaborative robots. The pipeline range includes cellulosic FOX CEL electrodes and basic vertical-down FOX BVD electrodes for large-diameter line pipe.

Ordering Böhler Welding consumables: what we need

Give the product name, the AWS or EN classification, the diameter and length, and the packaging you need. For pipeline electrodes also state the pipe grade, wall thickness, welding position and whether sour-service test values are required, because the Böhler Welding data sheets note that some test values are available on request.
