Hyundai S-2209.16 E2209-16 Duplex Stainless Steel Electrode
The Hyundai S-2209.16 is a stick electrode for manual metal arc welding of standard 22Cr duplex stainless steel, including SAF 2205 and UNS S31803. It carries the AWS A5.4 / ASME SFA-5.4 E2209-16, JIS Z 3221 ES2209-16 and EN ISO 3581-A E 22 9 3 N L classifications. Hyundai Welding describes a ferritic/austenitic all-weld metal structure with a PREN of 35, high resistance to pitting, intergranular and stress corrosion, and a service temperature of up to 250 °C. The datasheet also shows ABS, CCS, KR, NK, RINA and CE approvals for this electrode. Seven Star LLC supplies the Hyundai S-2209.16 for oil and gas, desalination and chemical projects in Oman and the GCC.
Duplex Stainless Steel and Why Filler Choice Matters
Duplex 2205 has become a workhorse alloy in the Gulf region. It offers roughly double the yield strength of 316L, so wall thickness and weight can be reduced, and its chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen content give much better resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking than austenitic grades. Produced water lines, desalination evaporator and RO piping, chemical tankers, storage tanks and structural parts in corrosive environments are all common uses.
A welded joint is only as good as its weakest zone, so the filler must produce a balanced two-phase microstructure with corrosion resistance comparable to the parent metal. The Hyundai S-2209.16 deposits typically 22.6% chromium, 8.9% nickel, 3.2% molybdenum and 0.13% nitrogen. The higher nickel compared with the base plate is the usual way 2209 fillers promote adequate austenite in the as-welded deposit.

Typical Chemical Composition (All-Weld Metal, wt%)
| C | Si | Mn | P | S | Cu | Ni | Cr | Mo | N |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.03 | 0.76 | 0.9 | 0.017 | 0.012 | 0.04 | 8.9 | 22.6 | 3.2 | 0.13 |
Typical Mechanical Properties
| Property | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength | 830 MPa (120 ksi) |
| Elongation | 28% |
| Impact toughness at -20 °C (0 °F) | 38 J (28 ft-lbs) |
| Impact toughness at -45 °C (-50 °F) | 30 J (22 ft-lbs) |
The toughness value at -45 °C is useful for equipment that must meet low design temperatures, although each project should confirm requirements in its own procedure qualification.

Where the Hyundai S-2209.16 Is Used
Across Oman, the Hyundai S-2209.16 fits fabrication and maintenance tasks such as:
- Produced water, injection water and sour service piping in oil and gas fields.
- Thermal and membrane desalination plant piping, tanks and pressure vessels.
- Chemical and fertiliser plant equipment exposed to chlorides.
- Ship and tanker repairs, where the listed marine classification approvals can be relevant.
- Structural duplex members on coastal facilities and jetties.
- Field welding of 2205 pipe spools where portable SMAW equipment is preferred.
General Duplex Welding Practice
The notes in this section are general welding knowledge rather than manufacturer data. Duplex steels are welded without preheat in most cases, but heat input and interpass temperature are controlled within limits set by the procedure, so that the weld and heat-affected zone keep a balanced ferrite-austenite ratio and avoid intermetallic phases. Typical project specifications ask for ferrite measurement and sometimes corrosion testing to ASTM G48 or impact testing at low temperature. Joint surfaces should be clean and free of carbon steel contamination, stainless steel brushes and dedicated grinding discs should be used, and back purging is recommended for single-sided pipe welds. Rutile electrodes such as the Hyundai S-2209.16 must be kept dry; redry them as stated on the datasheet and use a heated holding oven on site.
Choosing a Diameter
The five sizes of the Hyundai S-2209.16 cover most wall thicknesses found in duplex piping and plate work. As a general rule, 2.0 and 2.6 mm electrodes suit root and hot passes on thin-wall pipe and positional welds, where low current helps control heat input. The 3.2 mm size is the common all-round choice for fill passes in pipe and fittings, and 4.0 mm electrodes speed up fill and cap passes on thicker sections in the flat or horizontal position. The 5.0 mm size, rated 135 to 180 A, is listed for flat and horizontal use only and is best kept for heavy plate. Matching the diameter to the joint keeps heat input within the procedure range, which is particularly important for duplex steel. If you are unsure which mix of sizes to order for a project, Seven Star LLC can help you estimate quantities of the Hyundai S-2209.16 from your weld map or joint list.
Comparing 2209 and 2594 Fillers
As general guidance, 2209 consumables such as the Hyundai S-2209.16 are matched to standard 22Cr duplex grades like S31803 and S32205, while 2594 consumables are intended for 25Cr super duplex grades such as S32750 and S32760. Using the right one keeps the weld metal corrosion resistance in line with the base material and avoids unnecessary cost. Seven Star LLC can supply both types and help you check which suits your piping class.
