AMETEK Land Cyclops L Portable Non-Contact Pyrometer
Description
Overview
The AMETEK Cyclops L is a family of portable, non-contact infrared pyrometers from AMETEK Land for accurate temperature measurement of hot targets from 200 to 3000°C (392 to 5432°F). Land states that the Cyclops series sets the industry standard for high-quality portable pyrometers. The instrument uses through-the-lens sighting, so the operator sees exactly the target being measured, and its single-handed ergonomic design allows measurements in harsh environments. High-quality, fully focusable lenses give small spot sizes at any distance, and on-board data logging stores readings directly in the instrument.
Seven Star LLC supplies the AMETEK Cyclops L models and accessories to refineries, petrochemical plants, steel and aluminium smelters, cement plants, glass works and power stations in Oman and the GCC. Our Muscat team helps choose the right model and wavelength for the application, and we provide model selection support from Muscat.
The AMETEK Cyclops L Models
- C055L: 1000 to 2000°C, nominally 0.55 µm, with the advanced Meltmaster mode, fixed focus and a parallel 28 mm target spot to 5 m. Intended for molten metal pouring streams.
- C100L: 600 to 3000°C (displayed from 550°C), 1 µm with advanced spectral filtering, 180:1 circular field of view, focusing from 1 m to infinity.
- C160L: 200 to 1400°C, 1.6 µm with advanced spectral filtering, 180:1 circular field of view, accuracy 0.25 %K plus 2°C.
- C390L: 450 to 1400°C, nominally 3.9 µm, 180:1 square field of view. This wavelength is commonly used to see through flames and combustion gases in fired heaters and reformers.
Measurement Functions
The AMETEK Cyclops L offers four trigger and logging modes: single (classic), latch, burst and route. When the trigger is pressed, processed values including peak, continuous, average and valley are displayed in real time. Emissivity can be set from 0.10 to 1.20 in 0.01 steps, measurement resolution is 0.1°C or 1°F, and repeatability is 1°C (2°F). Response time is 30 ms for the C055L, C100L and C160L, and 500 ms to 98 percent for the C390L. Accuracy is listed as 0.5 %K for the C055L and C390L and 0.25 %K for the C100L.
The AMETEK Cyclops L optical system provides a 9 degree field of view with an eyepiece adjustable from −3.75 to +2.5 diopters. On the C100L and C160L, optional close-up lenses allow focus down to 215 mm, giving minimum target sizes as small as 0.4 to 0.5 mm. Without close-up lenses, the minimum target is 5 mm at 1 m.
Data Logging and Connectivity
Each AMETEK Cyclops L logs up to 9999 readings and 9 routes internally, eliminating the need for a separate recording device. Standard Bluetooth and USB connectivity allow periodic download or live streaming to a mobile device or PC. Land’s free Cyclops logger software shows current readings, a table view and a trend view, and an Android data logger app is available. For inspection teams, route mode is useful because it guides the operator through a fixed sequence of measurement points, such as the tubes of a fired heater, and stores the results in order.
Construction and Accessories
The rugged casing protects against heat, bumps and drops. The AMETEK Cyclops L weighs 0.83 kg (1.8 lb), operates from 0 to 50°C ambient, is sealed to IP40, and is powered by one MN1604 / 6LR61 / PP3 battery or USB. Standard accessories are a lens cap, protection window or filter, battery, wrist strap, USB cable and heat protection jacket. Optional accessories include close-up lenses, a waterproof carry case, a long eye relief eyepiece for use with goggles or face shields, and neutral density filters for the C100L to improve contrast on very bright targets. Traceable calibration is available.
Applications in Oman and the GCC
- Fired heater and steam reformer tube wall temperature surveys with the C390L.
- Furnace and kiln refractory and shell checks.
- Molten aluminium and steel pouring temperature with the C055L.
- Glass production, forging and heat treatment.
- Cement kiln burning zone and clinker checks.
In refineries and petrochemical plants the pyrometer is part of a wider combustion and process monitoring toolkit that may include the AMETEK Thermox WDG-V flue gas oxygen analyzer, the AMETEK 3050-OLV moisture analyzer and the AMETEK 5100P transportable TDLAS analyzer.
Good Measurement Practice (General Guidance)
The following points are general guidance rather than Land data. Choose the wavelength to suit the target: shorter wavelengths reduce errors from unknown emissivity on hot metals, while 3.9 µm is selected to view tube surfaces through furnace flames. Set emissivity from a reference measurement where possible, keep the lens clean, and make sure the target fills the measurement spot. Record readings in route mode to compare surveys over time, and send the AMETEK Cyclops L for calibration at the interval set by your quality system.
Why Use a Portable Pyrometer (General Guidance)
This section is general background rather than Land data. Fixed thermocouples show the temperature at only a few points and can drift or fail in hot, corrosive service. A portable AMETEK Cyclops L lets an inspector survey many points quickly without contact, which is valuable for hot spots on furnace tubes, refractory linings and process equipment that cannot be reached safely. Regular surveys with the AMETEK Cyclops L help operators run heaters closer to design limits, detect coking or flame impingement early, and plan maintenance with real data. The same instrument can then be used on other plant equipment, which spreads the cost of the investment across several departments.

About brand
Process analyzers for sulfur recovery, moisture and combustion are the AMETEK products most often requested by gas plants and refineries. AMETEK, a US instrument manufacturer founded in 1930 and based in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, sells them under names such as Western Research, Thermox and Drexelbrook. Seven Star LLC lists AMETEK gas analyzers, analyzer spare parts and level transmitters, and sources them for process plants in Oman.
AMETEK analyzers and parts listed
The AMETEK products on this page include:
- 5100HD and the transportable 5100P: tunable diode laser (TDLAS) analyzers, used for example for moisture in natural gas
- 3050-OLV: process moisture analyzer, with spare boards such as 305110902S
- Thermox WDG-V: flue gas oxygen analyzer for combustion control
- Western Research 900 air demand analyzer and 930 analyzer for H2S in sulfur pits
- Drexelbrook RCT-1210 RF level transmitter
- Spare parts: PCB assemblies, a protected gold mirror and hollow cathode lamps
Where AMETEK analyzers are used
The 900 air demand analyzer sits on the tail gas of a Claus sulfur recovery unit and measures H2S and SO2 so the air to the reaction furnace can be trimmed. The 930 watches the vapor space of the sulfur pit. Moisture analyzers such as the 3050-OLV and 5100HD serve gas dehydration, pipeline and LNG feed gas, and the Thermox WDG-V measures excess oxygen on fired heaters and boilers. These duties are common in gas processing and refining across the GCC.
Ordering AMETEK analyzers and spares: what we need
For spare parts, send the AMETEK part number, the analyzer model and its serial number. Boards and optical parts change with analyzer revision, and the serial number lets the build be checked in the manufacturer's records. For a new analyzer we need the stream composition, the component and range to be measured, sample pressure and temperature, area classification, power supply, outputs and whether a sample system or shelter is included. For Drexelbrook level transmitters give the full model number, the probe length and the process material.
