AMETEK EXSH1 Ex SPOT Flameproof Housing for SPOT+
Description
AMETEK Land EXSH1 Ex SPOT flameproof housing for SPOT+ pyrometers
The AMETEK Land EXSH1 Ex SPOT is a flameproof (Ex d) stainless steel housing that lets Ex SPOT+ infrared pyrometers be installed in hazardous areas with gas or dust atmospheres. The enclosure is certified to ATEX, IECEx and UKEX, so one specification can be used for projects across several regions. It needs no purge air for safety.
In the part name, EXSH1 is the housing and “Ex SPOT” identifies the pyrometer version it is made for. The same EXSH1 housing family also exists for the LWIR-640 thermal imager (listed as EXSH1 LWIR), so the pyrometer version is the one to choose when the instrument inside is an Ex SPOT+ unit. Seven Star LLC supplies the EXSH1 Ex SPOT in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

The manufacturer notes that the maximum functional temperature is limited by the SPOT+ pyrometer inside, while the enclosure stays safe at the higher temperatures shown in its markings. Always check the marking plate on the delivered unit against your area classification, gas group and temperature class before installation.
How the flameproof housing works
A flameproof enclosure contains any internal ignition and prevents it from igniting the surrounding atmosphere, instead of keeping explosive gas out. The EXSH1 body is 316 / 316L stainless steel with a sapphire window in front of the pyrometer optics. Because the window is gridless, the field of view is not obstructed by a protective mesh.
Cooling is optional. With no cooling the housing works to +50 °C ambient; air or water cooling extends the functional ambient range as shown in the table. Dust and water protection is IP66 and IP68.
Compatibility with Ex SPOT+ pyrometers
| Pyrometer | Type / wavelength |
|---|---|
| Ex M100 | Mono, 1.0 µm |

Measuring ranges differ between these pyrometers and are given in the SPOT+ brochure, so confirm the range of the model you select there. An existing SPOT+ pyrometer cannot be retrofitted into the EXSH1 housing. Plan the pyrometer and housing together at the enquiry stage.
Selection and ordering checklist for EXSH1 Ex SPOT
- Pyrometer model from the compatibility list above
- Hazardous-area zone, gas group and temperature class (zones 1, 21, 2, 22)
- Ambient temperature and whether air or water cooling is needed
- Mounting accessories for the housing
- Supply of 19 to 26.4 V DC at up to 2.3 A
- Approval needed: ATEX, IECEx or UKEX
- Cable glands and conduit entries suited to the Ex d enclosure
Installation and maintenance of EXSH1 Ex SPOT
The 20 kg housing needs a rigid bracket aligned on the target. Use certified glands and follow the flameproof joint rules: do not paint over or damage flame paths and do not open the enclosure under power in a hazardous area. Check the sapphire window periodically and clean it with a suitable cloth when dust or deposit builds up.
Wiring runs from a certified junction box or safe-area cabinet to the housing, with the 19 to 26.4 V DC supply sized for the 2.3 A maximum rating. Record the marking plate, serial number and certificate references in the plant hazardous-area register at commissioning, and keep a spare window seal set and gland kit on the shelf so a routine inspection does not become a long outage. Aiming is done on the bracket before the process is hot, using the pyrometer sighting method described in the SPOT+ documentation.
Typical applications in Oman and the GCC
The manufacturer lists continuous annealing lines, semiconductor growth and hydrocarbon processing and chemical applications. In Oman and the GCC, the relevant use is high-temperature process measurement in refineries, petrochemical units and gas plants where a standard pyrometer is not allowed in the classified area. The -40 to +70 °C certified range suits hot, sunlit outdoor installations.

Most of these analysers work on light absorption. UV analysers such as the 933 and 9900 measure H2S and SO2 by their absorption bands, and tail gas analysers use this to keep the H2S to SO2 ratio near 2:1 for the best Claus conversion. TDLAS moisture analysers use a tuned laser on a single water line, so they respond fast and do not suffer from the glycol and methanol contamination that affects sensor-based analysers.
Where AMETEK instruments are used
In Oman and the GCC, AMETEK analysers run on gas processing and sulfur recovery units, gas pipelines and custody points, refinery heaters and boilers, power station generators and steel and cement furnaces.
