Overview

The ABB Contrac RSD50 is a heavy-duty electric linear actuator delivering 50 kN (11,240 lbf) of rated thrust for large control valves and dampers in industrial process applications. It extends the Contrac electric actuator range beyond the lighter LME-series units into applications that would otherwise require a large pneumatic cylinder or hydraulic actuator.

Built for continuous, stall-proof positioning duty, the RSD50 is engineered for facilities standardizing on electric actuation to avoid the compressor and air-distribution infrastructure a pneumatic system requires. Operating Principle

The RSD50 converts motor rotation into linear thrust through an internal drive mechanism, positioning a valve stem or large damper linkage in response to a control signal from its dedicated Contrac electronic unit (EBN853, EBS852, EBN861, or EBS862 depending on the installation type). Its stall-proof S9-100% duty rating, per IEC 60034-1/EN 60034-1, lets the actuator hold position indefinitely against high process forces without thermal derating — essential for large modulating valves that must hold an intermediate position for extended periods.

Engineering Design of the ABB Contrac RSD50

The RSD50 delivers 50 kN of rated thrust, adjustable to 0.5, 0.75, or 1.0 times rated force to match the actual load. Stroke options range from a minimum of 0–15mm or 0–60mm up to a maximum of 0–120mm or 0–300mm, covering a wide range of valve travel requirements. Two speed variants are available: RSD50-3.0 (0.1–3.0mm/s) for precise, slower positioning, and RSD50-10.0 (0.1–10.0mm/s) for applications needing faster stroke response. The housing carries an IP66 protection rating and operates across −10°C to 65°C standard.
