Measurement Principle

The Limitorque MX uses a 100% repeatable and redundant absolute encoder for position sensing, combined with an electronic torque switch that eliminates the mechanical wear points found in traditional actuator designs. Instant actuator status and valve position are displayed in 11 languages, with the graphical display orientation configurable to rotate 180° and diagnostic graphs available for clearer data collection.

Simple “Yes” and “No” responses to dialog questions confirm the setup of the MX via solid-state Hall effect switches, and Flowserve Limitorque’s namesake torque-sensing feature ensures precise, repeatable operation. The MXa variant is SIL 3 capable in an “as built” configuration without requiring additional hardware modules to achieve certification, removing a potential point of failure from the safety system and delivering an industry-leading PFD (Probability of Failure on Demand) for a Type B complex device.

Engineering Design of the Limitorque MX

The Limitorque MX delivers output torque ranging from 20 ft.lbs to 1700 ft.lbs, with additional torque supportable via the addition of gearboxes; it is available in torque-only, thrust-based, linear thrust base, and rising stem configurations, and can be coupled to a PT or HBC worm gear reducer for operation on part-turn valves such as butterflies, balls, plugs, and dampers. The actuator carries an IP68 enclosure rating of 15m for 96 hours regardless of weatherproof or explosion-proof configuration, along with NEMA 4, 4X, and 6 certifications, and is available in weatherproof, explosion-proof, and submersible variants.

Low-temperature capability extends to -60°C (-76°F) with arctic temperature options, and modulating service supports up to 1200 starts per hour with solid-state starter options. Network connectivity includes Modbus DDC, Modbus TCP/IP, Profibus DP (with or without RedCom), Foundation Fieldbus H1, Profibus PA, DeviceNet, and HART, with 3-phase, 1-phase, and DC motor options available. LimiGard circuitry safeguards the actuator from spurious electro-magnetic interference, while optional Bluetooth connectivity (up to 10m range) enables diagnostic data transfer to a PDA, laptop, or tablet.
