Danfoss 130B1135 VLT PROFINET MCA 120 Option Card (Uncoated)

Description

A PROFINET interface for VLT HVAC, AQUA and Automation drives

130B1135 is the Danfoss VLT PROFINET MCA 120 option, uncoated version, an interface board for option slot A. The Danfoss Programming Guide states that it relates to ordering number 130B1135 (uncoated), ordering number 130B1235 (conformal coated) and the FCD 302 PROFINET interface. The card gives a VLT drive two Ethernet ports and lets it communicate with any system complying with the PROFINET schema version 2.2 and 2.3 standards, from PROFINET RT up to PROFINET IRT for high-end servo performance.

Station names, GSDML and cabling

A PROFINET controller needs a GSDML file for each device type, and the file depends on the drive series and firmware version. The Programming Guide lists GSDML versions for the FC 102, FC 202, FC 301, FC 302 and FCD 302 ranges. The station name of the option comes from the address switches: when all switches are ON or all OFF, the name is set through parameter 12-08 Host Name or by DCP command; in every other combination the switches take priority and the station name is built from parameter 15-40 FC Type plus a three-digit number. The change takes effect at the next power-up. PROFINET cables are based on category 5 balanced LAN cable to ISO/IEC 11801 Class D, and shielded cable is recommended near drives.

Replacement and fitting

The Danfoss installation guide for the MCA 120 describes the replacement procedure: disconnect power, remove the front cover, the LCP or blind cover and the LCP cradle, disconnect the cables from the existing MCA card, fit the new option into slot A with the Ethernet ports facing up for top cable entry, connect the Ethernet cables, set the address switches, and refit the cradle, LCP and cover. Wait for the DC-link capacitors to discharge before work. In harsh or humid environments choose the conformally coated 130B1235 instead of the uncoated 130B1135, and check that the drive firmware matches the GSDML version used in the controller.

Key features of the MCA 120

  • Two-port design with integrated switch: the two Ethernet ports allow drives to be daisy-chained in line or ring topologies, reducing the number of external switches in a motor control centre.
  • RT and IRT support: real-time communication covers ordinary speed control, while isochronous real time is available for synchronised motion with FC 302 drives.
  • Plug-in option for slot A: the card fits the drive’s standard fieldbus slot, so existing drives can be converted to PROFINET without replacing the drive.
  • Address switches or parameter naming: station names can be set in hardware for quick swap-out or through parameter 12-08 and DCP for software-based commissioning.
  • Choice of RJ45 or M12 cabling: matches both cabinet installations and decentralised FCD 302 drives.

Typical applications

In water and wastewater plants, PROFINET-connected VLT AQUA drives give the SCADA system speed, current, power and alarm data from each pump without hard-wired analog signals. In buildings and district cooling, VLT HVAC drives on fans, chillers and cooling towers can be monitored and controlled from a Siemens or other PROFINET controller. In process and material handling, AutomationDrive FC 302 units use the network for coordinated conveyor and winder control.

Commissioning steps

  1. Import the correct GSDML file for the drive series and firmware into the engineering tool (for example TIA Portal or STEP 7).
  2. Add the drive to the project, choose the telegram or PPO type, and assign the device name to match the station name of the card.
  3. Set the drive parameters for control source and reference source to the fieldbus, and configure the process data mapping in parameter group 9.
  4. Download the hardware configuration, check the link LEDs on both ports and confirm that cyclic data exchange is running.
  5. Test the control word, status word and speed reference with the motor uncoupled or under safe conditions before handing over.

Network design tips

  • Keep each copper segment within 100 m and use industrial-grade shielded Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable, separated from motor cables.
  • Earth cable shields at the drive and at the switch to drain high-frequency interference generated by the inverter.
  • When drives are daisy-chained, remember that powering down one drive interrupts the line beyond it unless a ring with media redundancy is used.
  • Document IP addresses, station names and firmware versions of all drives so a replacement card can be configured quickly.

Uncoated or coated for GCC sites

The uncoated 130B1135 is suitable for clean, air-conditioned electrical rooms. Pump stations, coastal desalination plants, sewage treatment sites and outdoor kiosks in Oman often combine humidity, salt and hydrogen sulphide, which can corrode unprotected electronics. For those locations the conformally coated 130B1235 is generally the safer choice, ideally together with an enclosure that keeps dust and condensation away from the drive.

Spare-part planning

Because the option is a plug-in board, holding one or two spare cards for a fleet of drives is a practical way to reduce downtime. Keep spares with the same coating type used in the plant and confirm compatibility with the drive firmware level before installation.

Information to include in your RFQ

  • Ordering number 130B1135 (uncoated) or 130B1235 (coated), and quantity.
  • Drive type code, power size and firmware version.
  • PLC brand and engineering software in use, if you need commissioning advice.

Documents and quotation

The Danfoss PROFINET MCA 120 Programming Guide is linked on this page. See the industrial communications category for other interface modules. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat; send the drive type code and firmware version with your RFQ, and confirm whether you need the uncoated 130B1135 or the coated 130B1235 before ordering.

About brand

Danfoss is the Danish engineering group that makes refrigeration and air-conditioning controls, heating components, variable speed drives and mobile hydraulics. Mads Clausen founded it on 1 September 1933 at his parents' farm in Nordborg on the island of Als, after making his first refrigeration expansion valve in 1932. Nordborg is still the group's headquarters, and Danfoss remains controlled by the Clausen family through the Bitten & Mads Clausen Foundation.

Milestones

  • 1932–1933: First expansion valve; the company is founded in Nordborg.
  • 1939: 26 employees. By the 10th anniversary in 1943 the company has 179.
  • 1950s: Rapid growth turns Nordborg into a Danfoss town with housing and schools for its workforce.
  • 1968: Danfoss launches its VLT frequency converter, one of the first mass-produced AC drives.
  • 2014: Acquisition of the Finnish drives maker Vacon, now the VACON brand.
  • 2021: Acquisition of Eaton's hydraulics business.

Choosing Danfoss products

For solenoid valves, check the operating principle. A direct-operated valve such as EV210B opens even at 0 bar differential pressure. A servo-operated valve such as EV220B needs a minimum differential (typically about 0.3 bar) to open, while an assisted-lift valve such as EV250B works from 0 bar. Coils are ordered separately, so the voltage on the coil (for example 230 V AC or 24 V DC) must match the control circuit. For drives, the VLT family is split by application: FC 51 Micro Drive for small machines, FC 102 HVAC Drive for fans and pumps in buildings, FC 202 AQUA Drive for water, and FC 302 AutomationDrive for demanding industrial duty.

Where Danfoss products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Danfoss drives run pumps, fans and compressors in district cooling plants, water and wastewater stations, desalination and building HVAC. Danfoss pressure switches, transmitters and solenoid valves are built into chillers, refrigeration plants, boilers and hydraulic systems, and AB-QM valves balance chilled-water circuits in large buildings.
