Emerson 1410S Wireless Gateway with 781S Smart Antenna

Description

Overview

The Emerson 1410S Wireless Gateway, used with the 781S Smart Antenna, connects self-organizing WirelessHART field networks to any host system. It manages the network automatically, configures and provisions devices through an integrated web interface, and passes measurement and diagnostic data to control systems, historians and asset management software over serial and Ethernet connections. Emerson states greater than 99 percent data reliability with industry-proven security, allowing sensor data from critical assets to remove blind spots and improve the productivity and safety of operations.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Emerson 1410S and its 781S antennas to oil and gas, utilities and process customers in Oman and across the GCC. Our engineering team in Muscat helps size network capacity, select housing, protocol and redundancy options from the official Emerson 1410S datasheet, and supplies the WirelessHART transmitters that join the network.

Operating Principle

WirelessHART, standardized as IEC 62591, uses IEEE 802.15.4 radios in the 2.4 GHz ISM band, divided into 15 channels with time-synchronized channel hopping and direct sequence spread spectrum. Every field device can route data for its neighbors, forming a self-organizing, self-healing mesh. If an obstruction blocks one path, data continues over paths the device has already established, and the network adds new paths as needed. No wireless expertise is required, because the network establishes the best communication routes automatically.

The Emerson 1410S acts as the network manager and security manager. It schedules communications, authenticates each device, encrypts all wireless data with 128-bit AES and collects the device updates at rates from 1 second to 60 minutes. The gateway then publishes the data to hosts through Modbus TCP/IP, Modbus RTU over RS-485, OPC DA and OPC UA, EtherNet/IP and HART-IP, with native integration into Ovation and DeltaV. Two smart antenna connections allow two WirelessHART networks, or one WirelessHART and one IEC 62734 network, to run on a single gateway.

Engineering Design of the Emerson 1410S

Two Emerson 1410S housings are available. The 1410S1 indoor version is a DIN-rail mounted engineered polymer unit weighing 0.59 kg and rated for –40 to 70 °C, while the 1410S2 outdoor version is a pole-mounted low-copper aluminum housing rated IP66, weighing 1.25 kg and rated for –40 to 65 °C. The gateway is powered from 10.5 to 30 Vdc or through IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet on either port, with steady-state consumption of 6.5 to 8 W depending on output option and antenna count. Single or dual Ethernet ports and an optional RS-485 serial port are available, and gateway redundancy can be ordered.

The 781S Smart Antenna is a separate engineered polymer unit, 9.4 cm in diameter and rated Type 4X and IP66/67, that connects to the gateway over up to 400 m of industrial shielded twisted pair. Intrinsically safe output options allow the antenna to be installed in Zone 0/1/2 and Class I Div 1/2 or in Zone 2 and Div 2 areas. Antenna choices include an internal antenna and 6 dB or 8 dB high-gain remote kits, and both the gateway and antenna were tested to IEC 60770-1 high vibration levels with no effect.

Industrial Applications

The Emerson 1410S is the backbone of a WirelessHART installation. Typical Emerson 1410S projects include monitoring of remote wellheads and flowlines, tank farm temperature and level, pump and heat exchanger health, steam trap and pressure relief monitoring, safety shower alarms and valve position feedback, all without running new signal cable. Because the network self-organizes, operators can start with a few points and grow to hundreds as more applications are added. In Oman these benefits apply to dispersed oil and gas fields in the interior, brownfield refineries and petrochemical units in Sohar, power and desalination plants on the coast, and port and terminal facilities in Duqm and Salalah.

Seven Star LLC supports wireless projects across Oman and the GCC with network planning input, device selection and delivery. Common field devices on an Emerson 1410S network include the Rosemount 648 wireless temperature transmitter, while devices can be commissioned with the Emerson AMS Trex device communicator and data can be brought into the Emerson DeltaV PK controller environment.

Switch and on-off signals can be added through the Rosemount 702 wireless discrete transmitter.
