Honeywell Experion C300 Process Controller (PCNT05)

Description

Experion C300 process controller for the Experion PKS platform

The Honeywell Experion C300 is the process controller at the centre of the Experion PKS distributed control system. It executes control strategies on a fixed, predictable schedule inside Honeywell’s Control Execution Environment (CEE), handles continuous, logic, sequential and batch control, and talks to field I/O over a dedicated redundant I/O network. Seven Star LLC supplies Experion C300 controllers and related Series C hardware in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat; this page explains the controller and how to specify spares or additions.

C300 is a controller family rather than one catalogue number. The latest member listed on the manufacturer’s page is the C300v5, with the module identifier PCNT05, and earlier generations remain in service in many plants. The exact module, the I/O terminal assembly and the redundancy hardware must match your system release, which is why we ask for the label data from the installed unit.

How the Experion C300 executes control strategy

A control engineer builds strategies in Control Builder from predefined function blocks such as PID, logic, sequence and math blocks, joined by soft wiring inside Control Modules and Sequential Control Modules. The strategy is loaded into the controller, where the CEE runs each block at its set execution period in the order the engineer chose. The result is a repeatable scan, which matters for fast loops such as turbine control and compressor anti-surge duty that the manufacturer lists among the target applications.

Changes can be made and loaded while other strategies keep running, so adding a loop does not stop the plant. In a redundant pair, the secondary controller continuously synchronises with the primary, and if the primary fails the system performs a bumpless transfer to the healthy partner. The CEE is platform independent, which allows the user application to move to newer controller hardware when it becomes available. The controller also supports on-process migration to a new software release when deployed redundantly.

Experion C300 communication, I/O and field-device integration

The controller connects upward to the Experion servers and stations through the Control Firewall on Honeywell’s Fault Tolerant Ethernet. Downward, each controller supports two dedicated I/O networks to the Series C and Process Manager I/O families, and the I/O can itself be redundant. Beyond conventional I/O, interface modules bring in FOUNDATION Fieldbus (FIM4 or FIM8), Profibus (PGM), EtherNet/IP and Profinet (EIM) and Modbus/TCP (PCDI). HART data passes through to control strategies and to asset management tools, and ISA100 wireless devices can be used through the Wireless Device Manager in the same Control Builder as wired I/O.

The IO HIVE concept in the C300v5 distributes I/O over a VLAN-based network and allows controller and I/O to be placed independently, which helps modular and parallel project execution. Peer-to-peer communication with other controller nodes, including C200, C200E and ACE nodes, protects investment in older systems.

Where the Experion C300 fits and related hardware

A working C300 installation includes more than the controller module. Expect an I/O termination assembly (IOTA) that carries the controller and its redundancy connection, a power and backup arrangement, Series C or Process Manager I/O modules, Fault Tolerant Ethernet switches and the Experion server and station software. Catalogue accessories listed for the family include internal kits for dual-cabinet Series C layouts, fuses, power supply modules and a battery backup mounting kit. Check the generation of every component: a C300 module, its IOTA and the system software release must be compatible.

Honeywell also lists add-on functions such as the FMC722 subsea automation interface and the STEAMPROP function block for real-time water and steam properties, both used with the C300. Safety functions normally run on a separate Safety Manager system, with the C300 and safety controller exchanging data over peer-to-peer links rather than sharing hardware.

Experion C300 selection and ordering checklist

  • Nameplate data of the installed C300 module and IOTA, including model number and revision.
  • Experion system release and whether the C300v5 (PCNT05) is acceptable in the existing system.
  • Redundant or non-redundant configuration, including redundancy cable and second module.
  • I/O family in use: Series C or Process Manager I/O, and whether IO HIVE is planned.
  • Fieldbus and gateway needs: FIM, PGM, EIM or PCDI modules, HART, ISA100.
  • Cabinet, power, battery backup and environmental conditions.
  • Whether you need a new controller, a spare, or a replacement for a legacy C200 or C200E node.

Installation, commissioning and care of the Experion C300

The controller uses the same vertical Series C form factor as the I/O modules, which directs heat flow around the air intakes and eases wire entry. Mount it on its IOTA in a cabinet with the required clearance, set the device index switches to give a unique odd-even address for each redundant pair, connect the redundancy cable, and make sure the I/O and FTE networks are cabled and labelled. Power the pair with the specified supply and confirm the status indicators on the front of the module.

At commissioning, load the controller firmware matching the system release, assign the controller in Control Builder, load the strategy and check synchronisation between primary and secondary. Test failover during a planned window. For maintenance, keep an identical spare module and the same firmware on the shelf, check battery and fuse status, review the diagnostic messages in the station, and back up the configuration database. Never swap redundant modules without confirming that the replacement has the same revision, since this affects synchronisation.

Typical Experion C300 applications in Oman and the GCC

Experion PKS with the C300 is used in refineries, gas processing, petrochemical, power generation, water and desalination and other process plants across the Gulf. Typical duties include furnace and column control, compressor and turbine control, utility distribution, boiler and heat recovery control, and batch operations. Cabinets are normally installed in air-conditioned control rooms or local equipment rooms, so the main environmental concerns are dust ingress during cable work and the stability of room cooling. Because C300 hardware is designed for long lifecycles, migration and expansion work is common: a plant often adds C300 controllers alongside older nodes or replaces ageing hardware without rewriting the control strategy.

About brand

Honeywell is the American industrial technology group whose products on this site cover gas and flame detection, pressure transmitters, flow measurement, gas metering, fire alarm systems and helicopter rotor balancing equipment. Its roots go back to a thermostat business in Minneapolis in 1885 and to Mark Honeywell's heating company, which merged with it in 1927. Several brands we list have joined Honeywell over the years: Gent fire systems of Leicester (part of Honeywell since 2005), Chadwick-Helmuth (a Honeywell business unit from 2002) and Elster gas metering (acquired around the end of 2015).

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Honeywell gas detectors and sensors, transmitters, Elster gas meters and flow computers, Gent fire alarm equipment and Chadwick-Helmuth balancers, and supply them and their spares in Oman and the GCC by part number.

Gas detection uses two basic approaches. Point detectors such as the Sensepoint XCD measure the gas at one location, with a catalytic or infrared sensor for flammable gas and an electrochemical cell for toxic gas such as H2S. Open path detectors such as the Searchline Excel send an infrared beam across an area up to a few hundred metres long and detect a gas cloud anywhere along it. Infrared sensors cannot be poisoned the way catalytic beads can, which matters on sites with silicones or H2S.

Where Honeywell products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Honeywell gas detectors protect wellheads, gas plants, refineries and tank farms. Elster meters and flow computers measure gas at city gate stations and in industry. Gent systems are installed in commercial buildings, hospitals and hotels, and Chadwick-Helmuth balancers are used by helicopter operators.

Ordering Honeywell products: what we need

Send the part number from the label (for example 02104-N-XSSA or SPXCDASMTXF). For gas detectors, add the gas, range, output and certification. For gas meters, add size (DN), flow range and pressure rating. For Gent equipment, add the panel type and loop protocol.

Facts checked against Honeywell press releases and SEC filings, and published histories of Gent and Chadwick-Helmuth, October 2026.
