Chromalox ITC1 / ITC2 Digital Heat Trace Controller

Description

Digital heat trace controller for one or two circuits

The Chromalox ITC1 / ITC2 intelliTRACE controllers switch heat trace circuits for freeze protection and process temperature maintenance. The ITC1 handles one circuit and the ITC2 handles two independently controlled and monitored circuits, each rated 40 A through solid-state relay power control at 100 to 277 VAC. They work with constant wattage, mineral-insulated or self-regulating heating cables and are intended for industrial locations that are non-hazardous or Class I, Division 2.

A soft start routine removes the in-rush current of self-regulating cable, which reduces nuisance breaker trips at cold start. The controller can also be used on non-heat-trace loads because the soft start is selectable. If a sensor fails, the output moves to a user-set duty cycle and bumpless transfer avoids abrupt current spikes when switching between manual and auto.

Ground fault protection and monitoring

Besides temperature and current, the ITC measures ground-fault leakage current (GFEP) and raises alarms for high and low temperature, high and low current, high GFEP and sensor failure. For 1-pole voltages (120 V and 277 V) the controller has an integral GFEP, while for 2-pole voltages (208 V and 240 V) the datasheet states that a two-pole GFEP breaker is required upstream. Chromalox notes that the requirement is waived in industrial establishments where qualified personnel maintain the system and ground-fault alarm indication is provided; the project engineer should confirm which applies.

Ordering the ITC

The model number is built as ITC plus circuits, communications, enclosure and a final zero, for example ITC2-000. Circuits: 1 or 2. Communications: 0 is Modbus RTU/RS485 (and RS422), 1 is Modbus TCP/Ethernet and 9 is other. Enclosure: 0 is NEMA 4X fiberglass and 1 is NEMA 4X 316 stainless steel. The stock list in the sheet shows ITC1-000, ITC2-000, ITC1-010, ITC2-010, ITC1-100, ITC2-100, ITC1-110 and ITC2-110, covering fiberglass or stainless enclosure with RS485 or Ethernet. Each unit includes one set of 16-gauge stainless steel mounting brackets.

Before ordering confirm the heating cable type and maximum circuit current, the supply voltage and pole count, whether line sensing, ambient sensing or both are needed, the enclosure material for the site and the plant network protocol. Related instrumentation is listed under controllers and data acquisition.

About brand

Chromalox is an American manufacturer of electric process heating, heat trace and thermal control products. The company was founded in 1917 by Edwin L. Wiegand and, according to its website, is today part of Spirax Group. Its catalog spans immersion and circulation heaters, tubular and strip heaters, heat trace cables and controls, and temperature and power controllers.

Industrial heaters and heat trace

The industrial range covers screw plug and flanged immersion heaters, over-the-side heaters, air and radiant heaters, steam generators and packaged process heating systems. Heat trace products include constant wattage, self-regulating and mineral-insulated cables, with thermostats, controllers and connection kits for freeze protection and process temperature maintenance.

Controls and requesting a quote

Controllers run from single-loop temperature and process controllers to SCR power controllers and heat trace controllers. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, lists selected Chromalox models for projects in Oman and the GCC. Send the full model code, voltage, kW or wattage and the fluid or application, and we will prepare a quotation from the Chromalox data sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many circuits does the Chromalox ITC control?
The ITC1 controls one circuit and the ITC2 controls two independently controlled and monitored circuits, each rated 40 A.
Which heating cables can it control?
It is designed for constant wattage, mineral-insulated or self-regulating heating cables, with line sensing or ambient sensing RTD inputs.
Can it be used in hazardous areas?
The sheet lists UL/cUL approval for ordinary locations and Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, D hazardous locations, plus CE.
What communication options exist?
Modbus RTU over RS-485 (also RS422) is standard, and Modbus TCP over Ethernet is an ordering option.
What does the soft start feature do?
It limits the in-rush current of self-regulating cable to reduce nuisance breaker tripping at cold temperatures; it can be switched off.
