AUMA FQM 10.1 Fail-Safe Unit for SQ 10.2 Actuators
Description
Overview
AUMA FQM 10.1 is the first fail-safe unit of the family to step up to a larger housing, with a minimum torque of 600 Nm and a weight of about 137 kg. It is paired with the SQ 10.2 and provides a fail-safe time of 15 s to 54 s for 90 degrees, set at the factory. The jump in mass and valve interface from the 07.1 reflects the energy that must be stored to move a mid-size butterfly or ball valve.
Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA FQM 10.1 to utilities, refineries and power plants throughout Oman and the GCC. For shut-down valves in Muscat, Sohar and Salalah we confirm the torque, the flange and the trigger logic with the project safety team.
Stored Energy for Mid-Size Valves
The AUMA FQM 10.1 moves the valve to a defined safe position using stored mechanical energy, so the movement continues even if the electrical supply has failed. The unit is released by an ESD signal at 24 V DC or by mains failure, and AUMA documents a fail-safe time of 15 s to 54 s for 90 degrees. The minimum torque of 600 Nm means the stored energy suffices for valves up to the top of the SQ 10.2 tripping range, and the time lengthens as torque demand grows.
In motor operation the unit works with the SQ 10.2 at operating times of 11 s to 63 s. The longer fail-safe times compared with the 07.1 are a design consequence of the higher torque class, and they suit pipelines where a rapid emergency closure could create a pressure surge. The ready contact and end position switches, rated 0.1 A at 30 V DC, report status, and the documented 500 fail-safe operations define the service life of the energy store.
Engineering Design of the AUMA FQM 10.1
The AUMA FQM 10.1 has an EN ISO 5211 F12 standard flange. F10 is available as an option, but only with a reduction flange, which AUMA notes explicitly. The coupling takes shafts up to 50 mm cylindrical, 36 mm square or 36 mm two-flat, and the swing angle is adjustable between 80 and 96 degrees.
Expect about 137 kg before the SQ 10.2 and controls, which means hoists on site and a check of the valve support. Vibration limits read 0.3 g for the F10 flange and 0.5 g for F12, tested between 10 and 200 Hz. Orientation may be vertical or horizontal with a support, but not downward. The enclosure is IP68 with KS protection, standard ambient is -30 °C to +70 °C (option -40 °C to +60 °C), and the explosion-proof FQMEx 10.1 is rated -30 °C to +60 °C.
Key Features
The AUMA FQM 10.1 gives mid-size shut-down valves a spring-powered safe state.
- A minimum torque of 600 Nm covers mid-size butterfly and ball valves.
- A fail-safe time of 15 s to 54 s limits surge on larger lines.
- F12 standard flange, with F10 only via a reduction flange.
- Shafts up to 50 mm cylindrical suit larger valve stems.
- Initiation by a 24 V DC ESD signal or by loss of mains supply, defined when the order is placed.
- A ready output and floating end position contacts report unit status to the safety logic.
- AUMA documents 500 fail-safe operations (ESD cycles) for the energy store.
- Paired with the SQ 10.2, with an explosion-proof FQMEx 10.1 for classified areas.
Selection Guidance for the AUMA FQM 10.1
For the AUMA FQM 10.1, the first decision is the mechanical interface. If the valve carries an F12 flange, the standard unit fits directly. If it carries F10, AUMA requires a reduction flange, which changes the stack height and must be reflected in the valve drawing. Next, compare the torque required in the safe direction with 600 Nm, and the allowed closing time with 15 s to 54 s.
Because the assembly is heavy, ask the valve supplier to confirm the permissible mass on the valve neck and the need for an additional support, particularly where vibration from pumps is present.
Industrial Applications
The AUMA FQM 10.1 is used on shut-down valves on pump discharge lines, cooling water headers, fuel and gas feeds and boiler inlet isolation, where the valve must reach a safe position even if power and control signals are lost. Power stations and desalination plants in the Sultanate use this class of valve for the emergency isolation of seawater circuits and auxiliary systems.
Adjacent units: AUMA FQM 07.1, AUMA FQM 12.1 and AUMA FQM/FQMEx fail-safe unit family.
The driving actuator is part of the AUMA SQ part-turn actuator range, the AUMA MATIC AM/AC integral actuator controls cover the controls, and the AUMA SQEx explosion-proof part-turn actuator is the hazardous-area counterpart.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.
AUMA actuator and gearbox types
SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.Where AUMA electric actuators are used
AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.Ordering AUMA actuators and parts: what we need
