Description

PSTX142-600-70 for 75 kW motors, with built-in bypass

PSTX142-600-70 steps up to the second housing size of the PSTX range. The ABB ordering table lists it for 75 kW at 400 V and 90 kW at 500 V, 40 to 125 hp for UL and CSA voltages, a rated current of 143 A and a full-load figure of 130 A.

The designation 142 refers to the model name while the ordering table shows 143 A as the rated current, so check the table in the linked catalogue extract when sizing. The net weight is 7.0 kg (15.4 lb).

Application notes for 75 kW motors

At this size the soft starter is often applied to water and wastewater pumps, large fans and crushers. The torque-control ramp is intended for pumps, and the catalogue notes that the soft-stop reduces water hammer when a pump is stopped.

Normal start (class 10) is assumed for the 4 x Ie for 10 s rating, and the data covers up to 10 starts per hour. The electronic overload class can be set to 10A, 10, 20 or 30 in the parameters, and ABB asks you to contact the local office for duty other than normal starts.

Installation, supply and accessories

Power connection is in-line, which means the soft starter sits in series with the motor cable. A separate control supply of 100 to 250 V AC is needed, with 24 V DC as the internal control circuit. The fan is thermostat controlled, so leave the clearances given by ABB in the manual.

Anybus fieldbus modules for PROFIBUS (1SFA899300R1001), DeviceNet (R1002), EtherNet/IP (R1006) and PROFINET (R1010) are listed as accessories. A fieldbus plug adaptor PS-FBPA (1SFA896312R1002) is also listed.

Documents and quotation

The linked file is the ABB softstarter catalog 1SFC132012C0201 – PSTX series pages (extract). Seven Star LLC supplies the PSTX142-600-70 on request from Muscat as an independent supplier; availability and lead time are given in the quotation. More products of this kind are in the Motor Soft Starters category, and a related item is the ABB AF09-30-10-11 contactor.

Confirm before ordering: motor kW and full-load current, line voltage (208-600 V for this type), start duty and starts per hour, the control supply on site and whether a fieldbus module is needed.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

ABB company profile

Formed 5 January 1988, by the merger of ASEA (Sweden) and BBC Brown Boveri (Switzerland), each holding 50%

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.

Ordering ABB products: what we need

Send the full type code from the nameplate (for example ACS580-01-046A-4 or 266DSH...) and, for spare parts, the ABB ID number (such as 3BSE008508R1 or 1SBL176001R3010). For drives, add the motor power and current and any option codes (+...). For instruments, send the complete order code, which sets range, materials and approvals. Baldor motors are listed on their own brand page.
