Danfoss 132H2229 VLT Soft Starter MCD6-0448C, 448 A
Description
A 448 A VLT Soft Starter MCD 600 for continuous-connection starting of large motors
Danfoss order number 132H2229 identifies the VLT Soft Starter MCD 600 model code MCD60448CT5S2X00CV2, also written MCD6-0448C. The soft starter is rated 448 A for three-phase supplies from 200 to 525 V AC and is built in frame size S2 with IP00 protection. The C in the model code denotes the version without an internal bypass contactor, in the installation guide a model for continuous connection. The control voltage option CV2 accepts 110-120 V AC or 220-240 V AC. As a rule of thumb a 448 A starter suits motors of roughly 250 kW at 400 V, which makes it a typical choice for large pumps, compressors, crushers and fans where a direct-on-line start would stress the supply.

Selection and installation notes
Because the model has no bypass, the thyristors stay in circuit during run and the starter heat must be removed from the panel; the fact sheet shows the integrated-bypass versions for S1 to S3 as the high-efficiency option, so a bypass model is better for long-running loads where panel space is tight. The installation guide requires copper or aluminum conductors rated 60/75 °C for this model and recommends a compression connector for models MCD6-0144B to MCD6-0579B (check the guide for your C model). Apply control voltage before or together with mains voltage, set the motor full-load current (parameter 1-2) and note that the default protection is Class 10 at 105% of FLA.
Communication cards for EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus TCP, PROFIBUS, DeviceNet and Modbus RTU are available as options. Confirm motor current, starting duty and control voltage with us before ordering. See also the published Danfoss VLT Soft Starter MCD 600 family page and the motor soft starters category.
Installation checks for the MCD6-0448C in a motor control panel
Because this is an IP00 open-chassis unit, it belongs inside an enclosure that keeps live terminals out of reach and gives the frame room for air to move vertically past the heatsink. Plan the panel layout so that the soft starter is not sitting directly above other heat sources such as transformers or resistors, and keep cable trays clear of the airflow path. With no internal bypass, the starter dissipates heat for the whole running period, so the enclosure ventilation or cooling should be sized for continuous operation rather than only for the start sequence.
Route the three-phase supply and motor cables separately from the control wiring and from any fieldbus cable fitted to an optional communication card. Tighten power terminations to the values given in the installation guide, and recheck them after the first period of operation, since large conductors carrying several hundred amperes can settle. Confirm that the upstream fuses match the Type 1 or Type 2 coordination listed above, as substituting a different fuse type changes the protection the starter receives during a short circuit.
Commissioning the soft start on large pumps, compressors and fans
Before the first start, verify the control voltage at the CV2 terminals, check the motor insulation and confirm phase rotation with the driven machine decoupled where practical. Enter the motor full-load current, then begin with conservative start settings and observe the actual starting current and run-up time on the first starts. A pump or fan normally needs a different start profile from a crusher or loaded compressor, so the settings should follow the real load rather than a copied parameter set from another site.
Record the final parameters and the observed start behaviour in the commissioning sheet. This record makes later troubleshooting much simpler, especially if the motor, impeller or process conditions change after handover. If the starter is connected to a control system through a communication card, test the start, stop and trip status signals end to end before the plant runs unattended.
Operating the starter in Oman and GCC conditions
Summer heat across Oman and the wider Gulf raises the air temperature inside motor control panels, and a continuous-connection starter adds its own losses on top of that. Check the derating guidance in the Danfoss documentation against the expected panel temperature, and consider whether the switchroom is air-conditioned or relies on filtered ventilation. Fine dust carried by wind can coat heatsinks and reduce cooling, while coastal humidity and salt can encourage corrosion on terminals and busbars.
Practical measures include sealed or filtered enclosure openings, regular filter replacement, and avoiding condensation when a panel cools down overnight after a hot day. Where panels stand in outdoor kiosks or plant rooms without air conditioning, these points deserve extra attention at the design stage.
Routine maintenance
Schedule periodic inspections with the power isolated: clean dust from the heatsink and enclosure, look for discoloured insulation or signs of overheating at connections, and retighten terminals as recommended. Review the trip and event history held by the starter to spot repeated overloads or long starts, which can point to mechanical problems in the driven equipment. Keep the installation guide with the panel documentation so that maintenance staff can refer to the correct procedures.

About brand
Danfoss is the Danish engineering group that makes refrigeration and air-conditioning controls, heating components, variable speed drives and mobile hydraulics. Mads Clausen founded it on 1 September 1933 at his parents' farm in Nordborg on the island of Als, after making his first refrigeration expansion valve in 1932. Nordborg is still the group's headquarters, and Danfoss remains controlled by the Clausen family through the Bitten & Mads Clausen Foundation.

Choosing Danfoss products
For solenoid valves, check the operating principle. A direct-operated valve such as EV210B opens even at 0 bar differential pressure. A servo-operated valve such as EV220B needs a minimum differential (typically about 0.3 bar) to open, while an assisted-lift valve such as EV250B works from 0 bar. Coils are ordered separately, so the voltage on the coil (for example 230 V AC or 24 V DC) must match the control circuit. For drives, the VLT family is split by application: FC 51 Micro Drive for small machines, FC 102 HVAC Drive for fans and pumps in buildings, FC 202 AQUA Drive for water, and FC 302 AutomationDrive for demanding industrial duty.
Where Danfoss products are used
In Oman and the GCC, Danfoss drives run pumps, fans and compressors in district cooling plants, water and wastewater stations, desalination and building HVAC. Danfoss pressure switches, transmitters and solenoid valves are built into chillers, refrigeration plants, boilers and hydraulic systems, and AB-QM valves balance chilled-water circuits in large buildings.
