Choosing the right rating
Sizing rule of thumb for this code: nameplate current at or below 85 A, supply inside 208-600VAC, and an ambient that stays under the derating threshold of 40 degC. The kilowatt value (45 kW at 400 V in line) is only a guide.
Order-code reading, derived from the catalogue entry: the characters after ADXL give the current size (85 A for this code), with the standard auxiliary-supply version covering 100-240VAC.
Where it is used and how it is installed
Soft starters of this type are common on HVAC fans and chilled-water pumps, bore-hole pumps and small compressors. They cut the inrush current seen by the supply and remove the mechanical jolt that direct-on-line starting puts on gearboxes and belts.
Physical data: 95 x 226 x 182 mm, 2.9 Kg, IP00. The starter has 3 digital inputs and 3 digital outputs, enough for start, stop, reset and a line-contactor command without an interface relay.
Why a soft starter with integrated bypass
A soft starter controls motor voltage with thyristors only during acceleration and deceleration. Once the motor reaches full speed, the built-in bypass relay closes and carries the running current, so the thyristors no longer conduct. This reduces heat generated inside the starter during normal operation, which keeps the unit compact and limits the cooling needed in the panel compared with a starter that runs continuously through its semiconductors.
Compared with direct-on-line starting, a controlled ramp reduces the inrush current and mechanical shock on couplings, belts and gearboxes, and reduces pressure surges in pipework. Compared with a variable speed drive, a soft starter is a simpler and smaller choice when the motor only needs to run at fixed speed.
Setting up the ADXL0085600
- Enter the motor rated current so the electronic overload protection matches the motor.
- Choose the trip class to suit the load: lower classes for pumps and fans with quick starts, higher classes for high-inertia loads such as crushers or large fans that take longer to accelerate.
- Select the start method (torque ramp, voltage ramp or constant torque, each with current limit) and set ramp time and current limit to achieve a smooth start without nuisance trips.
- For pumps, a torque-ramp stop helps reduce water hammer when the pump is shut down.
- NFC programming allows parameters to be prepared or copied with a smartphone, which speeds up commissioning of several identical starters.
Applications in Oman and the GCC
At 85 A, the ADXL0085600 suits motors of 45 kW at 400 V, a common size for water transfer and booster pumps, cooling-tower fans, compressors, conveyors and crushers. Where ambient temperature in the motor control room exceeds the rating conditions (T≤40 °C in the ratings table), consult the manufacturer’s derating data or consider the optional forced cooling. Dust filters on panel ventilation should be cleaned regularly.
What to include in an RFQ
- Motor power, rated current, voltage and type of load.
- Number of starts per hour and the expected starting time.
- Whether optional cooling fans, communication modules or other accessories are required.
- Quantity and delivery location in Oman or the wider GCC.
