Overview

The ABB Contrac RHD4000 is a mid-range electric rotary actuator delivering 4000 Nm of rated torque, sitting between the compact RHD1250 and the heavy-duty RHD16000 in ABB’s RHD electric rotary actuator range. It targets quarter-turn valves and dampers whose torque demand exceeds what a smaller actuator can deliver, without requiring the largest RHD16000 frame.

Operating Principle

The RHD4000 converts electric motor rotation into rotary output torque, driving a valve or damper shaft between end positions in response to a control signal from its dedicated Contrac electronic unit. Its stall-proof S9-100% duty rating, per IEC 60034-1/EN 60034-1, lets the actuator hold an intermediate modulating position indefinitely without thermal derating, with rotation angle field-configurable between 35° minimum and 270° maximum around a typical 90° quarter-turn setting.

Engineering Design of the ABB Contrac RHD4000

The RHD4000 delivers 4000 Nm of rated torque, adjustable to 0.5, 0.75, or 1.0 times rated output to match the actual valve or damper load. Travel time for a 90° stroke is adjustable from 30 to 900 seconds, with operating speed adjustable from 3.0 down to 0.1°/s. It is powered by 115VAC (94–130V) or 230VAC (190–260V) single-phase supply at 47.5–63Hz, housed in an IP66/NEMA 4X-rated enclosure, and operates standard across −10°C to 65°C, with higher-temperature variants available for demanding installations.

Industrial Applications

The RHD4000 is specified for medium-to-large quarter-turn valve and damper actuation in power generation, process, and water treatment plants across Muscat, Sohar, and Salalah, where torque demand exceeds compact-actuator range but the largest RHD16000 isn’t required. Common duties include mid-size butterfly valve actuation, larger HVAC/process dampers, and isolation valves on higher-diameter process lines.

Across the GCC’s power and process industries, the RHD4000 lets engineering teams cover the middle of the valve-size spectrum on the same Contrac electric actuator platform used for both smaller and larger valves, simplifying spares stocking and maintenance training across a plant’s actuator fleet.
