AKS 4100: a continuous liquid level sensor for refrigerant vessels

Danfoss 084H4501 is an AKS 4100 liquid level sensor in the cable version, with an insertion length of 5000 mm (197 in) and a G 1 process connection. The sensor measures the level of refrigerant in a vessel continuously and returns a 4 to 20 mA signal, so the plant controller can hold the level of a receiver, separator or flooded evaporator within a band.

The ratings are a maximum working pressure of 100 bar (1450 psig), a temperature range of -60 to 100 C, an ambient range of -40 to 80 C and enclosure IP67. The supply is 14 to 30 V DC, power consumption is 0.7 W, the maximum load resistance is 500 ohm and net weight is 2.3 kg. Approvals shown are CE, EAC and UA.

Continuous level measurement in refrigeration

Level sensors replace float switches where the controller needs a measured value rather than a high/low alarm: pump separators, liquid receivers, economisers and chiller evaporators. The 4 to 20 mA output is read by the controller, so the same sensor can drive an electronic expansion valve or a liquid feed valve in a level loop.

The package includes an HMI with menu languages English, German, French and Spanish, which is used to set the span and the output during commissioning. The 5 m cable version suits tall vessels; the AKS 4100U is a related variant with a different version of the output, listed under its own code.

Mounting and ordering notes

The sensor is lowered into a stilling pipe or standpipe in the vessel and sealed by the G 1 connection, so the nozzle size and the insertion length must match the vessel. Wire with screened cable and keep the signal line clear of power cables.
