Endress+Hauser FMP53 Levelflex Hygienic Guided Radar Transmitter

Description

Endress+Hauser FMP53 hygienic Levelflex guided-wave radar

The Endress+Hauser FMP53 is the hygienic member of the Levelflex guided-wave radar family. The FMP53 uses a polished stainless steel rod probe and sanitary process connections so it can be cleaned in place and sterilized in place in food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical tanks. The device measures the distance from a reference point to the product surface with a guided microwave pulse and converts it to level. Seven Star LLC supplies the FMP53 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat, and prepares the quotation from your connection and tank data.

Guided radar is unaffected by vapor, foam, agitation and changes in density or conductivity, which is a practical advantage in vessels that are cleaned with hot media or run through temperature cycles. The FMP53 is designed around those conditions, with a gap-free construction, electropolished surfaces on separable probes and sealing material choices for CIP and SIP.

How the FMP53 delivers reliable hygienic level measurement

A pulse is guided along the rod and reflected where the dielectric constant changes, namely at the liquid surface. The transit time gives the distance, and the electronics subtract it from the empty distance entered during setup. Optional linearization with up to 32 points converts the level to volume or mass in non-cylindrical vessels. Multi-echo tracking evaluates the history of the received signals to suppress false echoes from agitators, nozzles or heating coils.

For hygienic duty the details matter. The inseparable rod has a mechanically polished surface, the separable rod is electropolished, the process seal is a gap-free design, and the rod can be reused after autoclaving when the separable version with the protective cover is used. A connectable reference probe and a calibration kit are available as accessories for periodic verification.

FMP53 seal materials and temperature

O-ring material Process temperature Approvals listed
EPDM –20 to +130 °C FDA, 3A (Class II), EHEDG, USP Class VI
FFKM (Kalrez) –20 to +150 °C FDA, 3A (Class I)
FKM –10 to +150 °C EHEDG, USP Class VI

The seal approvals apply to the stated material only. Match the seal to the CIP and SIP temperature of your plant rather than the normal process temperature.

Where the FMP53 fits among related Levelflex parts

Within the FMP5x range, the FMP52 is the PFA-coated version for corrosive liquids, the FMP51 and FMP54 serve general liquids and high temperature or pressure, and the FMP56 and FMP57 serve bulk solids. The FMP53 is the model for sanitary connections and ASME BPE-oriented projects. Seven Star LLC lists the FMP52, FMP56 and FMP57 separately for comparison. In a hygienic plant, the FMP53 is typically paired with a point-level device for overfill protection and a hygienic temperature sensor.

The same electronics and operating concept as the other Levelflex models apply: local display with guided menus, Bluetooth operation through the SmartBlue app, HistoROM data memory, and Heartbeat Technology functions for diagnostics and verification.

FMP53 selection and ordering checklist

  • Connection standard and size: Tri-Clamp, DIN 11851, DIN 11864-1A, NEUMO, Varivent or SMS.
  • Probe length up to 4 m, separable or inseparable rod, and whether the protective cover for autoclaving is needed.
  • Seal material to match the CIP and SIP temperature and any FDA, 3A, EHEDG or USP requirement.
  • Surface finish, material certificates and the ASME BPE option if the project specifies it.
  • Dielectric constant of the product; below 1.6 may need confirmation, and liquefied gases are on request.
  • Communication: HART, PROFIBUS PA or FOUNDATION Fieldbus and display or Bluetooth options.
  • Hazardous-area classification, SIL or WHG needs, and linearity protocol (3-point or 5-point).

Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the FMP53

Mount the probe so that it does not touch tank walls or internals, and check that the nozzle dimensions are suitable for the connection. When NEUMO BioControl connections are used, the reference point is different from the other connections, so enter the correct empty distance during commissioning. Tighten clamps with the correct gasket, and keep the hygienic seal clean and undamaged.

Commissioning is guided and short, and can be done through the local display or by Bluetooth on a tablet. After CIP or SIP cycles, review the diagnostic messages and check for buildup. Retain a spare seal set in the material used on your plant so a seal replacement does not delay a batch. If an inseparable probe is damaged, replace it as a unit.

Typical FMP53 applications in Oman and the GCC

Oman and the GCC have growing dairy, juice, bottled water, edible oil and pharmaceutical manufacturing, and the FMP53 suits storage tanks, mixing vessels and process tanks in these plants. It also serves desalination post-treatment and potable water tanks where hygienic design is desired. With ambient operation from –20 to +80 °C and an IP66/IP68 housing, the transmitter copes with hot production halls and washdown, while the guided-radar principle copes with steam, foam and condensate above the product.

Where Endress+Hauser instruments are used

In Oman and the GCC, Endress+Hauser instruments are common in oil and gas production and processing, refineries and petrochemicals, desalination and water networks, wastewater treatment, power plants and food and beverage plants. Coriolis meters measure hydrocarbon and chemical flows, electromagnetic meters cover water and wastewater, radar transmitters handle tank and silo level, and Liquiline analysers monitor water quality. Proline 300 and 500 flowmeters include Heartbeat Technology for in-situ verification, which reduces the need to remove a meter for checks.

Ordering Endress+Hauser instruments: what we need

The order code on the nameplate (for example PMP71-1QA1S11RDADU) defines every option: measuring range, process connection, materials, output, approvals and display. Send it with the serial number; Endress+Hauser can retrieve the original configuration from the serial number. For a new instrument add the medium, operating and design pressure and temperature, range, line size or tank geometry, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Modbus) and the hazardous-area approval required. Older models such as Promass 80/83 or Micropilot M are replaced by current Proline or 80 GHz Micropilot devices.
