Using it in the field
When two PLCs on separate networks, perhaps from different vendors, must swap a limited set of data, the spanner is the bridge: each side sees it as an ordinary device, with EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP supported and PROFINET on one port as the datasheet states. The galvanic isolation between the two ports keeps the networks separate, and the 1:1 NAT router helps when both sides use the same address range. It sits at the machine boundary on skid and package-unit interfaces.
Installation hint: mount the block on a flat surface with the two fixing holes, use the supply and bus connectors the table lists, assign the IP address or use DHCP before connecting to the controller, and fit protective caps on unused ports so the IP65, IP67 or IP69K rating is kept. Check the power budget of the sensor and actuator groups.
Type code, ident number and checks
Derived from the datasheet titles: TBEN is the Turck block Ethernet family, S1 and S2 are the compact 32 mm wide housings with M8 connections, L4 and L5 are the larger housings with M12 connections (L4 with a 4-pin and L5 with a 5-pin 7/8-inch supply connector in the feature list), DIP means digital PNP inputs, DOP digital PNP outputs and IOL IO-Link master channels. Ident number 6814035 identifies this exact module.
Please check the fieldbus protocol and firmware needed by your PLC, any hazardous-area conditions in the Quick Start Guide, the supply connector, the connector style (M8 or M12) of your sensors and valves, and the number and type of channels before you place an order. The figures above follow the manufacturer datasheet, and any later datasheet revision from the maker takes precedence.

Two networks, one block
Turck’s datasheet describes the TBEN-L5-EN1 as an Ethernet spanner for master-to-master data exchange with a 1:1 NAT router. It has two separate, electrically isolated Ethernet interfaces, so two controllers on different networks can exchange data bidirectionally without joining the networks together. The supported protocols are EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP and PROFINET, with PROFINET supported on Ethernet port P2. Each port uses a 4-pin D-coded M12 connector at 10/100 Mbps.
- Modbus TCP: static IP, BOOTP or DHCP addressing; function codes FC1, FC2, FC3, FC4, FC6, FC15, FC16 and FC23; up to 8 TCP connections.
- EtherNet/IP: addressing to the EtherNet/IP specification, 3 Class 1 (CIP) connections.
- PROFINET: DCP addressing, conformance class B (RT), minimum cycle time 1 ms, Fast Start-Up below 150 ms, topology detection and automatic addressing.
The integrated web server is reached at 192.168.1.254 by default through port P1.
Digital inputs and rugged housing
Besides the network functions, the block has 16 PNP digital inputs on 5-pin M12 sockets (EN 61131-2 type 3, input delay 2.5 ms), with group diagnostics. Sensors on ports C0 to C7 are supplied from V1 with 120 mA per port, short-circuit proof. The fully potted electronics sit in a glass-fibre reinforced PA6-GF30 housing of 60.4 × 230.5 × 38.8 mm rated IP65, IP67 and IP69K, tested for vibration up to 20 g and shock. It operates from −40 to +70 °C at altitudes up to 5000 m, is UV resistant, and carries ATEX zone 2/22, CCC-Ex, FM Class I zone 2 and cULus approvals. Turck notes that TBEN-L5-EN1 and TBEN-L1-EN1 are identical devices with the same ident number, 6814035.
Typical uses
A common use is linking a machine builder’s controller to the plant network: the machine keeps its own IP addresses on one port, while the plant PLC or SCADA reaches it through the NAT router on the other. It is also used to exchange interlock and status data between two production lines whose controllers use different protocols, for example a PROFINET line and an EtherNet/IP line, and the on-machine housing means no control cabinet is needed.

About brand
Turck is the German automation company for sensors, connectivity, fieldbus I/O and interface technology. It grew from Hans Turck's engineering office in Mülheim an der Ruhr: in 1965 a chemical plant ordered an isolation amplifier for intrinsically safe circuits, and the first 20 units were built by his brother Werner Turck in Halver. The family-owned Turck group is still headquartered in Mülheim an der Ruhr, with production in Halver and other sites.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Turck sensors and I/O devices for machine builders and maintenance teams in Oman and the GCC.
