Applications and selection notes
It slides into the T-groove of a cylinder barrel without extra mounting accessories and can be fitted with one hand, the datasheet notes, with optional accessories for other cylinder designs. The sensor detects the piston magnet and gives a stable end-position signal with a long overtravel range, a 1 mm hysteresis figure and a repeatability better than 0.1 mm. This particular type code carries the S97 and S1165 special-version suffixes, so match the whole code when ordering. The cable is listed as 3 mm diameter, grey TPE with 3 x 0.14 mm cores and 2 m length, and a cable clip is included in delivery. The ambient range of -40 to +70 C is what the special-version suffixes buy over the standard type. As the sensor reacts to the piston magnet, confirm that the cylinders on your equipment actually carry one.
During commissioning, move the magnet through its full travel and note where the LED changes state, then compare that point with the rated figure. Tighten fixings only to the datasheet torque, and keep the cable strain-relieved so vibration does not stress the connection.
Selection check before ordering
Ident number 4685735 identifies this exact variant. The datasheet gives the output as 3-wire, NO contact, PNP and the connection as Cable; other housing, output and cable versions carry different type codes and ident numbers.
Before ordering, confirm the connector or cable length, the output type and supply voltage, the ambient temperature range, and the magnet or cylinder type the rated distance refers to. Values on this page are copied or summarised from the manufacturer datasheet; where the datasheet and a later revision differ, the manufacturer document governs.
Installing the sensor in the cylinder T-groove
Before fitting the BIM-UNT-AP6X/S97/S1165, drive the cylinder to the end position that must be detected and keep it there with the air supply safely controlled. Slide the sensor into the T-groove, move it slowly along the barrel until the yellow LED switches, and then fix it a little beyond that point so the signal is stable rather than on the edge of switching. Use the 0.4 Nm figure for the fixing screw; overtightening a plastic PP housing can distort it and shift the switching point.
Lay the 2 m TPE cable along the cylinder and machine frame with the supplied cable clip and other suitable ties, leaving a gentle loop where the cylinder or machine moves. Avoid running the cable over sharp profile edges or next to welding cables and motor leads, where interference and mechanical damage are more likely.
Wiring and commissioning checks
Connect the three wires to a 10 to 30 VDC supply and a PNP-compatible input on the PLC or input module, following the wiring diagram in the datasheet. Keep the load current within the 150 mA rating. With the system powered but the machine in a safe state, cycle the cylinder by hand or in jog mode and confirm that the PLC input follows the LED at both slow and normal speeds.
If two sensors sit on one cylinder, check that each responds only at its own end position. Magnetic fields from neighbouring cylinders, steel brackets or nearby magnets can influence a magneto-resistive sensor, so watch for unexpected switching when adjacent actuators move.
Using the BIM-UNT in hot, dusty and humid GCC sites
The listed -40 to +70 C ambient range and IP67 rating suit many packaging lines, workshops and outdoor skids in Oman, but the temperature at the cylinder surface can be higher than the room air when machines stand in direct sun or near ovens and sealing jaws. Measure the real temperature at the mounting point during the hottest part of the day if the application is close to the limit.
Fine dust and sand can settle in the T-groove and around the sensor. Keep the groove clean during installation, and in washdown or humid coastal areas make sure water cannot collect along the cable and run towards the housing.
Maintenance and troubleshooting
During routine checks, look for cable abrasion, loose clips and sensors that have moved along the groove after vibration or impact. A sensor that switches late or intermittently is often slightly out of position rather than faulty; re-check the setting against the LED before replacing it. Record the final sensor position, for example with a marker on the profile, so that a replacement can be fitted at the same point and the machine returned to service with minimal adjustment.

About brand
Turck is a German manufacturer of sensors, connectivity and fieldbus technology for factory and process automation, founded in 1965 and headquartered in Mülheim an der Ruhr. The family-owned group develops and manufactures sensors, connectors, interface technology and I/O systems.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Turck sensors and I/O devices for machine builders and maintenance teams in Oman and the GCC.
Turck product series
Most of the Turck products here are inductive proximity sensors: threaded M12, M18 and M30 barrels in flush (BI) and non-flush (NI) versions, uprated-range (U) sensors, rectangular CP40 and CP80 housings and BIM magnetic-field sensors for detecting pistons in pneumatic cylinders. The type code describes the sensor; in BI5-M18-AP6X-H1141, BI means flush mounting, 5 is the switching distance in mm, AP6X a three-wire PNP output and H1141 the M12 connector.
Turck also makes RU ultrasonic sensors, PS pressure, TS temperature and LS level sensors, FCI inline flow sensors, the CMVT vibration and temperature sensor for condition monitoring over IO-Link, and fieldbus and Ethernet I/O modules and communication components.
Where Turck sensors are used
Position detection on conveyors, packaging machines, presses and robotic cells; level, pressure and temperature monitoring on hydraulic units and process skids; and vibration monitoring on motors, pumps and fans.
Ordering Turck sensors: what we need
Send the full type code and the six- or seven-digit ID number printed on the sensor or its label. If the label is missing, give the housing size, flush or non-flush mounting, switching distance, output type (PNP or NPN, NO or NC), supply voltage and connection (cable or connector).
