Using it in the field
Compared with the 15 mm non-flush M30 sensors, this flush type can be installed level with a metal mounting plate and still hold a 10 mm range, which keeps the sensor protected from knocks. The datasheet describes it as resistant to magnetic fields, with an extended temperature range of -30 to +85 C and a high switching frequency of 1 kHz. Those characteristics make it a practical choice near welding equipment, drives and motors on skids and fabricated frames.
Installation hint: tighten the housing nut only to the torque shown in the table, keep the active face clear of surrounding metal to the extent the mounting distances require, and route the cable away from welding and heavy motor feeders where practical. A sensor set too close to adjacent metal can switch earlier than the rated distance suggests.
Type code, ident number and checks
Reading the code against the datasheet rows (a derived summary, not Turck’s own key): the leading BI corresponds to the mounting condition shown as Flush, the digits to the rated switching distance of 10 mm, the housing token to the design Threaded barrel, M30 x 1.5, the output suffix to 3-wire, NO contact, PNP, and the last element to the connection Connector, M12 × 1. Ident number 1636140 identifies this exact variant in the Turck catalogue.
Points to confirm with us before ordering: the mounting condition (flush or non-flush) against the free zone around the sensor, the supply voltage and output type (PNP or NPN, the target material and gap, the connector type and cable length, and NO or changeover) of your PLC input. Everything in the table comes from the datasheet as published, so the maker document is the final reference.
What “factor 1” means in practice
Conventional inductive sensors have reduction factors: their switching distance is quoted for mild steel and falls considerably for stainless steel, brass, aluminium or copper. The uprox+ principle used in this sensor detects all metals at the same distance, so a 10 mm rating applies whether the target is a steel cam, an aluminium flag or a stainless-steel valve stem. This simplifies selection on mixed-material machines and makes one spare part usable for many positions.
Resistance to magnetic fields
Standard ferrite-core sensors can switch falsely or lock up in the strong fields around resistance welding guns, induction heaters and high-current busbars. The coreless uprox+ design gives the 300 mT DC and AC field stability listed in the datasheet, which is why the sensor is often specified in automotive body shops and fabrication lines.
Typical applications
- Position detection of clamps, slides and fixtures in welding cells.
- End-position feedback on quarter-turn valves and dampers.
- Speed and rotation monitoring with a toothed wheel or cam, within the 1 kHz switching frequency.
- Presence of metal parts on conveyors and in material-handling equipment.
- Machine guards and doors as non-safety position indication.
Installation and maintenance
- Observe the mounting distances in the datasheet when sensors are mounted side by side or facing each other, to avoid mutual interference.
- Set the target at a gap within the secured operating distance (up to 0.81 × Sn), not at the full 10 mm, to allow for temperature drift and tolerances.
- Use the yellow LED to confirm switching during commissioning.
- Clean metal chips and weld spatter from the PBT active face at intervals; heavy accumulation of ferrous swarf can cause permanent switching.
Suitability for Gulf sites
The ambient range of −30 to +85 °C covers equipment exposed to high summer temperatures, and IP68 sealing protects against wash-down water and heavy dust. For outdoor use, choose an M12 cordset with a UV-resistant jacket and protect the cable from direct sun.
Connecting to the PLC
The sensor is a three-wire PNP normally-open device: brown to +24 V, blue to 0 V and black as the switched output, following the usual M12 pin assignment shown in the datasheet wiring diagram. It suits sourcing PLC inputs of type 1 or 3. With the output short-circuit protected and reverse-polarity protected, wiring mistakes during commissioning do not normally damage the sensor.

About brand
Turck is a German manufacturer of sensors, connectivity and fieldbus technology for factory and process automation, founded in 1965 and headquartered in Mülheim an der Ruhr. The family-owned group develops and manufactures sensors, connectors, interface technology and I/O systems.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Turck sensors and I/O devices for machine builders and maintenance teams in Oman and the GCC.
Turck product series
Most of the Turck products here are inductive proximity sensors: threaded M12, M18 and M30 barrels in flush (BI) and non-flush (NI) versions, uprated-range (U) sensors, rectangular CP40 and CP80 housings and BIM magnetic-field sensors for detecting pistons in pneumatic cylinders. The type code describes the sensor; in BI5-M18-AP6X-H1141, BI means flush mounting, 5 is the switching distance in mm, AP6X a three-wire PNP output and H1141 the M12 connector.
Turck also makes RU ultrasonic sensors, PS pressure, TS temperature and LS level sensors, FCI inline flow sensors, the CMVT vibration and temperature sensor for condition monitoring over IO-Link, and fieldbus and Ethernet I/O modules and communication components.
Where Turck sensors are used
Position detection on conveyors, packaging machines, presses and robotic cells; level, pressure and temperature monitoring on hydraulic units and process skids; and vibration monitoring on motors, pumps and fans.
