Brand:

ABB CR-M230AC4L Interface Relay 230 V AC 4 c/o 6 A

Description

CR-M230AC4L: four changeover contacts and an LED on a 230 V AC coil

CR-M230AC4L is the four-contact CR-M relay with a 230 V AC coil and a coil LED (suffix L). Its four changeover (SPDT) contacts are rated 6 A at 250 V, so one mains signal can switch four circuits at once, which suits interface duty in control cabinets and marshalling panels.

The data sheet lists a Lloyd’s Register approval for the devices with four changeover contacts, in addition to UL 508, CSA, VDE, GOST and CCC as printed, so it is of interest for marine and offshore panels. Confirm the current approval status against the label of the delivered item.

What differs from the two-contact relays

Because four contacts are packed into the same 21.2 x 27.5 x 35.6 mm body, the ABB table gives smaller clearances and creepage distances for this version, with overvoltage category II and pollution degree 2, against category III and degree 3 for the 2c/o relays. Current ratings are lower too: 6 A thermal, 1 A at 230 V AC15 and a making current of 12 A.

The coil is the same 1.6 VA AC type as in the other CR-M AC relays and allows ambient temperatures from -40 to +55 C. Typical pick-up is 10 ms and release is 8 ms.

Sockets for four-contact relays

The CR-M4SS standard screw socket (1SVR405651R3000), the CR-M4LS logical screw socket (1SVR405651R3100) and the spring-clamp CR-M4LC (1SVR405651R3200) accept four-contact relays. The fork-type CR-M4SF (1SVR405651R3300) is another option.

A varistor module CR-P/M 82 (1SVR405656R2000) can be added for 230 V AC overvoltage protection. Note that the L version already has a coil LED, so an LED function module is normally not needed.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

ABB company profile

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.

Ordering ABB products: what we need

Send the full type code from the nameplate (for example ACS580-01-046A-4 or 266DSH...) and, for spare parts, the ABB ID number (such as 3BSE008508R1 or 1SBL176001R3010). For drives, add the motor power and current and any option codes (+...). For instruments, send the complete order code, which sets range, materials and approvals. Baldor motors are listed on their own brand page.

Facts checked against ABB company filings and published histories of ASEA and Brown, Boveri & Cie, October 2026.
