Operating Principle
The MEDC LD15 uses a low-current-consumption LED array to generate a high-intensity flash without the power draw or heat generation associated with older strobe or filament beacon technology, delivering effective candela outputs from 41 cd (steady, blue lens) up to 128 cd (60 fpm, clear lens) depending on lens colour and selected flash rate. Five user-selectable functions – steady, 60 fpm, 80 fpm, 120 fpm, and double flash – are configurable both locally at the unit and remotely, allowing a single beacon model to serve multiple alarm priority levels across a facility’s fire and gas or process alarm philosophy simply by changing the flash pattern rather than swapping hardware.
On the MEDC LD15, because the entire LED driver and array are sealed within the flameproof (Ex d) glass reinforced polyester enclosure, the LD15 contains any internal ignition source while still transmitting a bright, clearly visible signal through its borosilicate glass lens. This combination of flameproof electrical containment and high-efficiency optical output makes the LD15 well suited to both indoor process units and exposed offshore platform locations where corrosion resistance and low maintenance are equally critical to safety-instrumented signalling.
Engineering Design of the MEDC LD15
The MEDC LD15 housing is molded from UV-stable glass reinforced polyester with a stainless steel 316 backstrap and stainless steel fixing screws, ensuring a totally corrosion-free product suited to coastal and offshore GCC installations. The unit accepts up to three 1/2 in or three 3/4 in NPT conduit entries, is available in pipe-mount or direct-mount configurations, and can be fitted with an optional cast aluminium or stainless steel wire guard for additional mechanical protection in high-traffic industrial areas.
For the MEDC LD15, operating across a wide voltage range from 12 V DC to 48 V DC or 110 V AC to 254 V AC, the LD15 is certified across a broad temperature envelope from -55°C to +70°C (T5) or -55°C to +55°C (T6), and carries an IP66/IP67 ingress protection rating with NEMA 4X and 6 compliance. The beacon is offered in six lens colours – red, blue, green, amber, clear, and yellow – with natural black or custom-painted finish options, and optional tag/duty labels and relay-initiate functionality for integration with fire and gas control panels.
