Brand:

Cortem XLFE-MIA Ex Medium Intensity Obstruction Light

Description

Ex db eb LED obstruction light for flare stacks, towers and tall structures

The Cortem XLFE-MIA is a medium intensity LED obstruction light for hazardous areas, designed for Zone 1 with an Ex db optical source. The white flashing XLFE-MIA is rated above 20,000 candles in daytime operation and above 2,000 candles at night and complies with ICAO Annex 14 for medium intensity type A aviation obstruction lights. The fixed red XLFE-MIC, with more than 2,000 candles, covers medium intensity type C.

Cortem lists oil refineries, chemical and petrochemical plants, onshore and offshore plants, loading jetties, combustible liquid depots, high buildings and aircraft storage facilities as typical applications. The lamp body acts as both the explosion protection and the heat sink, which avoids resin-coated optics that can deteriorate over time.

System design and power supply

The XLFE-MIA is not a stand-alone device. It is part of a system powered from a control panel, which keeps the power supplies accessible and reduces maintenance at height. Cortem states that the system can manage failure control of the lamps, the switching on of spare indicators and synchronisation between panels by cable or GPS.

Available accessories include an Ex or watertight protected control panel, cable glands NAV20IB for non-armoured cable or NEV20IB for armoured cable, a heat shield and polyester painting.

Selecting and installing the light

Check with the aviation authority or plant operator which obstruction light type and quantity the structure needs, because the number of lights per level depends on the height and the regulation. Choose type A white for day and night operation or type C red where the regulation permits.

Check the site ambient against the two ranges in the datasheet, minus 40 to plus 40 degrees C and minus 40 to plus 60 degrees C, and confirm the temperature class on the certificate. Terminate the M20 entry with a certified gland, keep the panel in a safe area or an Ex enclosure, and mount the fixture with its anodised base as shown in the datasheet dimensional drawings.

About brand

Cortem is an Italian manufacturer of electrical equipment for environments with a risk of explosion and fire. Cortem S.p.A., the main company of Cortem Group, was founded in 1968 in Villesse, Italy, and the group today supplies industrial plants, offshore platforms, refineries and shipyards with certified products for hazardous areas.

Explosion-protected product range

The catalogue covers junction boxes in aluminium, stainless steel and GRP, control and command stations, metal cable glands and connectors, plugs and sockets, LED floodlights, linear and high-bay luminaires, hand lamps, signalling and obstruction lights, and weatherproof series equipment. Products are certified to ATEX and IECEx, with UKEX and other schemes available according to the model.

Applications and documentation

Typical sectors named by the company include oil and gas, chemical and pharmaceutical plants, mining, shipbuilding and traditional and green energy. Each product family has a datasheet with the marking, zones, temperature classes and certificate numbers, so the equipment can be matched to a hazardous area classification before ordering.

Sourcing through Seven Star LLC

Seven Star LLC supplies Cortem products to customers in Oman and the GCC and quotes against the model code, zone and certificate requirement.
