Brand: Elga
Elga Maxeta 5 E7027 Acid-Rutile Electrode
Description
Acid-rutile iron-powder electrode for fast horizontal fillets
The Elga Maxeta 5 is an acid-rutile iron-powder electrode with 160% recovery, classified AWS A5.1 E7027 and EN ISO 2560-A E 42 2 RA 73. Elga intends it for general construction steels welded in the horizontal and horizontal-vertical positions, where a fast burn-off rate lets the welder run long, small fillet welds at high deposition.
The manufacturer recommends it for plate that has been treated with primer or is contaminated by rust, mill scale or paint, and notes that both the weld appearance and the transition to the base material are smooth and consistent. That makes it a sensible option where fatigue resistance of the joint matters.

Why E7027 differs from the more common E7024
Both classes carry heavy iron-powder coatings, but E7027 has a more acidic slag chemistry and is rated for horizontal fillets at higher currents. The usual trade is a slightly deeper, more fluid weld pool and a flatter fillet profile, while E7024 is often chosen where the easiest slag removal and the finest bead ripple are the priority. Maxeta 5 also carries a -20 °C impact requirement, which many rutile iron-powder electrodes do not.
On the printed table, the 5.0 x 450 mm size runs 200 to 360 A and burns off in 75 seconds with an arc-time deposition of 4.8 kg per hour; the 700 mm version of the same diameter lengthens that to 118 seconds, which suits long continuous fillet runs on structural steel.
Practical points before ordering
Check the approval you need against the data sheet list, since the 6.0 mm size is covered by TUV only according to the manufacturer note. Redry at 90 °C for two hours if the pack has been opened for some time. Fit the leg size to the diameter, and keep travel speed even so the slag follows the pool instead of running ahead of it.
How the Elga Maxeta 5 electrode works
A stick electrode is a metal core wire with a coating. The arc melts the core and the coating, the coating makes a gas shield and a slag that protects the weld pool, and the slag is chipped off after welding. The Maxeta 5 has an acid-rutile coating with iron powder, and the iron powder raises the recovery to 160 percent, which means that the weld metal deposited weighs more than the core wire. A high recovery gives a fast burn-off rate, so the welder can run long, small fillet welds with high deposition. The electrode is classified AWS A5.1 E7027 and EN ISO 2560-A E 42 2 RA 73.
Where the Maxeta 5 is used
- Horizontal fillet welds in general construction steel.
- Horizontal-vertical positions.
- Plate that has primer, rust, mill scale or paint.
- Fabrication of frames, beams and structures with long fillets.
- Joints where a smooth transition to the base material helps fatigue resistance.
Selection checklist for the Maxeta 5
- Classification E7027 and E 42 2 RA 73.
- Process SMAW for un-alloyed steel.
- Current type: DC plus or minus, or AC with an open circuit voltage above 65 V.
- Diameter and length: 3.2, 4.0, 5.0 or 6.0 mm, in 450 mm or 700 mm.
- Current range for the diameter, for example 150 to 240 A for 4.0 mm.
- Yield strength of 420 MPa minimum and tensile strength of 510 to 560 MPa.
- Elongation of 22 percent minimum.
- Impact energy of 47 J minimum at -20 degrees C.
- Redrying of 90 degrees C for 2 hours.
- Weld metal per kilogram of electrodes: 0.71 to 0.73 kg.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes
Store the electrodes dry, and redry them at 90 degrees C for 2 hours if they have taken up moisture. Set the current in the range for the diameter, and use a short arc with a drag or a small weave on horizontal fillets. Clean the joint of loose rust and dirt even though the electrode tolerates primer and mill scale. Remove the slag after each pass and check the fillet size with a gauge. Keep a record of the batch number and the welder for traceable work.
