Teledyne Oldham Simtronics iTrans 2 Gas Monitor 2B200 LEL Catalytic Remote

Description

Overview

The Oldham iTrans 2 gas monitor, part iTrans2-2B200, is a single-sensor configuration of the iTrans 2 transmitter with one LEL catalytic sensor mounted remotely. It is a fixed point gas monitor with dual analog outputs, designed for continuous combustible gas measurement in the range 0-100% LEL. This Oldham iTrans 2 gas monitor is supplied with the remote LEL catalytic sensor as described by the iTrans2-2B200 part number.

The iTrans 2 is a well-established fixed gas detection platform that supports electrochemical, catalytic bead and infrared sensors, on-board or remotely mounted, with smart sensor technology that reports sensor life and simplifies calibration. The remote mounting option places the sensor at the measurement point while the transmitter stays in a convenient location.

Engineering & Design

The Oldham iTrans 2 gas monitor transmitter accepts up to two sensors on certain models; the 2B200 configuration carries one LEL catalytic sensor remotely. Remote sensors communicate with the main transmitter over a digital ModBus signal and can be located up to 200 meters from the main unit using #18 AWG shielded cable.

Calibration of the iTrans 2 is performed with the non-intrusive keys using the applicable calibration gas, and the smart sensor stores its own calibration data so the transmitter recognizes the sensor and its history on connection. Fault diagnostics are communicated through the standard 4-20 mA fault codes, for example 1 mA for a failed or missing sensor, making wiring faults and sensor faults easy to identify at the controller. The ordering matrix (iTrans2-ABCDEFG) defines single or dual sensors, on-board or remote, for toxic, combustible and oxygen gases.

The LEL catalytic sensor measures combustible gases from 0-100% LEL in 1% increments. The transmitter provides dual 4-20 mA outputs (one per sensor) or ModBus RTU output, and HART is available as an option. Smart sensors are factory pre-calibrated and automatically send sensor information such as remaining sensor life to the transmitter, with the life indicator displayed after each calibration.

Ordering Information

Order the Oldham iTrans 2 gas monitor by part number iTrans2-2B200. Confirm the cable length between the remote sensor and the transmitter before ordering; installations beyond 200 m require additional engineering review.

The iTrans 2 monitor reads the remote LEL catalytic sensor, and the controller provides the alarm and the 4-20 mA output for the gas detection system.

Installing the Remote LEL Sensor

The value of a remote sensor is that the detection point can be placed where gas is most likely to accumulate while the transmitter stays accessible. Good practice when laying out the installation:

  • Locate the sensor according to the gas density: low for heavier-than-air vapors such as propane or hydrocarbon condensate, higher for methane-rich natural gas, and always close to likely leak sources.
  • Point the sensor downward and fit the recommended weather or splash guard so rain, wash-down water and dust do not block the sensor inlet.
  • Keep the transmitter at a height where the display and calibration keys can be reached safely without scaffolding.
  • Use the specified shielded cable, terminate shields at one end only, and use cable glands certified for the hazardous area classification.
  • Follow the site gas detection philosophy and cause-and-effect matrix when wiring outputs to the fire and gas system.

Commissioning and Calibration

After power-up, allow the catalytic sensor to stabilize before performing the zero and span calibration with certified calibration gas of the correct type and concentration. Then carry out a bump test and confirm that the analog output and alarm states reach the fire and gas controller correctly. Record the as-left values for the maintenance file.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting

  • Loss of sensitivity: catalytic bead sensors can be poisoned by silicones, lead compounds or sulfur compounds, and inhibited by halogenated vapors. Bump test regularly and replace sensors that fail to span.
  • Zero drift: check for temperature extremes, moisture ingress or a blocked sensor inlet.
  • Fault output: check the remote sensor cable and connections first, then the sensor itself.
  • Low-oxygen areas: catalytic sensors need oxygen to work; consider infrared detection for inerted spaces.

Applications in Oman and the GCC

Fixed LEL monitoring of this type protects compressor houses, wellhead and manifold areas, tank farms and loading bays, analyzer shelters and pump rooms on oil and gas, refinery and petrochemical sites across Oman and the Gulf. The remote option is particularly useful in pits, trenches and under process equipment where direct access is limited.

About brand

Detcon is an American manufacturer of fixed gas detection for hazardous areas, founded in 1983 and based in The Woodlands, Texas. Its first focus was gas detection for the oil and gas industry, later widened to chemical, petrochemical and water and wastewater plants. Since 2019 Detcon has been part of Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection, which Teledyne formed by buying 3M's gas and flame detection business.

Seven Star LLC lists Teledyne oxygen and moisture analyzers, analyzer circuit boards, replacement sensors and Detcon detectors, and sources them by part number for plants and utilities in Oman.

Ordering Teledyne parts: what we need

Teledyne Analytical Instruments parts are identified by a letter and number code, such as C70043A or B71875, and by the analyzer model and serial number. Send all of them. Oxygen sensors are selected by class for the background gas and range, so name the sample gas composition and the analyzer model. For a Teledyne Detcon gas detector or flame detector, send the model and full part number from the label, the target gas and range, output, and the area approval required. We check each code against the manufacturer's documentation and propose the listed replacement when a part has been superseded.

Facts checked against Teledyne's 2019 acquisition announcement and published company profiles, October 2026.
