Brand:

Hochiki ESP FIREbeam Xtra Addressable Beam Smoke Detector

Description

A beam detector with an integral ESP loop module

The Hochiki ESP FIREbeam Xtra is a reflective beam smoke detector approved by VdS to EN 54-12:2015, with a detection range of 7 to 70 m as standard and 140 m or 160 m using the range extension kits. It has an integral loop module, so it connects directly to a Hochiki ESP analogue addressable loop and appears to the panel as an addressable device.

A separate controller unit lets engineers commission, monitor and maintain the detector from ground level. The head uses motorised self-alignment to the centre of the reflector, then continually monitors alignment and realigns if building movement occurs. New optics are said to increase sensitivity while internal software cuts false alarms.

Ancillaries and range selection

The datasheet lists a unistrut adapter, a replacement controller (REP-CONT), single reflector, anti-condensation window, reflector and range extension kits, an adjustable wall bracket (FB-BRACKET) and a short-range mask (SHORT RM) for runs up to 20 m. Choose the range kit by the measured distance from head to reflector. The weights printed in the datasheet are labelled in grams but read as 1.1 and 0.55, so they are not quoted here.

Compatibility checks

Confirm that the panel supports the Hochiki ESP protocol and the device count per loop, and that the 17 to 41 VDC loop supply suits the system. For conventional systems the cdx version of the FIREbeam Xtra is the matching model. Provide the mounting height and beam distance when requesting a quotation.

How the Hochiki ESP FIREbeam Xtra beam detector works

A beam smoke detector sends an infrared beam across a room to a reflector and back to the detector head. Smoke in the path of the beam reduces the amount of light that returns, and when the loss exceeds the alarm threshold the detector reports a fire. One beam can cover a long distance, so it protects large open spaces with few devices. The FIREbeam Xtra has a motor that aligns the head to the centre of the reflector and keeps checking the alignment, so it can correct small shifts caused by building movement.

Where the ESP FIREbeam Xtra is used

  • Warehouses and large storage halls.
  • Atria, shopping malls and exhibition halls.
  • Factories with high ceilings.
  • Aircraft hangars and sports halls.
  • Places where point detectors are hard to reach for maintenance.

Selection checklist for the ESP FIREbeam Xtra

  • Beam length: 7 to 70 m as standard, or longer with the 70 to 140 m and 140 to 160 m kits.
  • Loop protocol: Hochiki ESP analogue addressable.
  • Supply voltage of 17 to 41 VDC and supply current of 3.5 mA.
  • Alarm sensitivity from 25 to 50 percent, with a default of 35 percent.
  • Approval to EN 54-12:2015.
  • Operating temperature from -10 to +55 degrees C.
  • Ingress protection of IP65 when properly mounted and terminated.
  • Controller for commissioning from ground level.
  • Accessories: reflectors, brackets, anti-condensation window and short-range mask.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes

Mount the head and the reflector on stable surfaces, facing each other with a clear line of sight and without any obstacle in the beam. Follow the spacing rules of the fire code for beam position and height. Connect the head to the addressable loop and set its address. During commissioning, use the controller to start the self-alignment and then check the signal level. Clean the optics when needed, and carry out a functional test by blocking the beam with a test filter, as the instructions say.

Requesting a quotation for the Hochiki ESP FIREbeam Xtra

Send the beam length, the number of beams and the accessories that you need. Seven Star LLC serves industrial customers in Oman and the GCC and replies with a quotation based on the information provided.

Choosing the range kit

Measure the distance from the head to the reflector, and select the standard unit or the range kit that covers it. For short runs up to 20 m, a short-range mask is available.

Avoiding false alarms

Moving objects, such as cranes and vehicles, can cross the beam. Plan the beam position so that it stays clear of these.

Panel compatibility

Check that the fire panel supports the Hochiki ESP protocol, the number of devices per loop and the loop supply voltage.

Records and tests

Record the address, the beam length and the test date of each detector, and keep the commissioning report.

Planning the beam path and mounting surfaces

Walk the area before installation and mark the positions of the head and the reflector. Check that the mounting surfaces are rigid, because a wall that moves a lot can exceed the alignment range, and that lights, ducts, pipes and cranes do not cross the beam. Keep the reflector clean and free from condensation, and plan safe access for the occasional cleaning.

Ordering information for the detector

When ordering, state the ordering code for the beam length that you need, together with any range kits, brackets and spare controllers.

About brand

Hochiki is a Japanese fire detection company, established in Tokyo in 1918 as Japan's first fire alarm manufacturer, with leading insurance companies among its founders. It makes smoke and heat detectors, beam detectors, addressable fire alarm systems and emergency lighting. Hochiki America has operated in the US since 1972.

Hochiki product series

The ACD-EN is an intelligent multi sensor detector for Hochiki addressable systems.

Beam smoke detectors include the CDX FIREbeam Conex and CDX FIREbeam Xtra conventional detectors and the ESP FIREbeam Xtra addressable detector.

Multi sensor detectors combine smoke and heat sensing to detect different fire types and reduce false alarms. Beam detectors send an infrared beam across an open space and alarm when smoke reduces the signal, covering large areas with fewer devices.

Detectors must match the panel protocol and be installed and tested to the local fire code.

Where Hochiki detectors are used

Offices, hotels, schools and hospitals, and large open spaces such as warehouses, atriums and halls where beam detectors cover long distances.
