Brand:

Hochiki CDX FIREbeam Conex Conventional Beam Smoke Detector

Description

A reflective beam smoke detector commissioned from a phone

The Hochiki CDX FIREbeam Conex is a conventional reflective beam smoke detector approved to EN 54-12. A single beam head and one reflector cover 7 to 70 m, and range extension kits raise this to 140 m or 160 m. Beams like this protect warehouses, atria, sports halls and other tall, open spaces where spot detectors would be impractical to mount and maintain.

It does not use a separate controller unit. Commissioning, monitoring and maintenance are done by app over Bluetooth from a phone or tablet at ground level. A motorised head aligns itself to the centre of the reflector during commissioning and then keeps checking alignment, correcting itself if building movement shifts the beam.

Range kits and add-ons

The datasheet lists anti-condensation variants of the window, reflector and extension kits (COND-KIT, REF-AC, WINDOW-AC, 70KIT140-AC, 140KIT160-AC) for locations where condensation could affect the optics, plus a unistrut head adapter, an adjustable wall bracket (FB-BRACKET) and a short-range mask (SHORTRM) for use up to 20 m. Select the extension kit by the distance between head and reflector, not by room size.

Notes for specifiers

Confirm the beam path for obstructions, mounting surface stability, and whether a conventional zone input on the panel suits a 12 to 30 VDC detector. For addressable systems, compare with the ESP FIREbeam Xtra.

How the Hochiki CDX FIREbeam Conex beam detector works

A reflective beam detector sends an infrared beam across the protected space to a reflector and receives it back in the same head. In clean air the receiver sees a steady signal. When smoke drifts into the beam, part of the light is absorbed and scattered, the signal drops, and when the drop reaches the set sensitivity the detector raises an alarm. Because smoke is detected anywhere along the path, a single beam can replace many spot detectors in a high ceiling, and the equipment is installed at the sides of the space, not on the ceiling.

The Conex uses an 870 nm optical wavelength and a motorised head that aligns itself during commissioning and keeps checking the alignment afterwards.

Where the FIREbeam Conex is used

  • Warehouses, logistics centres and factories with high roofs.
  • Atria, shopping malls and exhibition halls.
  • Sports halls, theatres and places of worship where ceiling devices are hard to reach.
  • Spaces where access for testing and maintenance of spot detectors would need lifting equipment.

Selection checklist for the Conex beam detector

  • Distance between head and reflector: 7 to 70 m as supplied, 70 to 140 m with the 70KIT140, and 140 to 160 m with the 140KIT160.
  • Alarm sensitivity, adjustable from 25 to 50 percent, with a default of 35 percent.
  • Supply of 12 to 30 VDC from a conventional zone of the fire alarm panel and the panel compatibility.
  • Mounting surface and brackets, such as the wall bracket or the unistrut adapter, and whether the structure moves.
  • Environment: -10 to +55 degrees C, humidity up to 95 percent and IP65, with the anti-condensation kits where the optics may mist.
  • Short-range mask for runs up to 20 m.
  • Beam path free from obstructions such as cranes, lighting and hanging banners.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes

Mount the head and the reflector on solid surfaces that do not shift with temperature or wind. Use the Bluetooth app to run the alignment from the ground, check the signal level and set the sensitivity. After commissioning, perform a functional test with the filter test method described by the manufacturer. Clean the window and the reflector from time to time, because dust lowers the signal strength, and compare the system with the local fire code, since distances from walls and ceilings are defined there.

Requesting a quotation for the Hochiki CDX FIREbeam Conex

Send the beam distance, the panel type, the mounting arrangement and the quantity. Seven Star LLC serves industrial customers in Oman and the GCC and replies with a quotation based on the information provided.

Design points for a beam detector layout

Beam detectors are placed according to the fire code of the project, which sets the height below the ceiling, the spacing between beams and the distance to the walls. Plan the beam so that it does not cross areas where moving equipment, steam or heavy dust may interrupt it. A layout drawing with the head and reflector positions helps the installer and the inspector. Where the building roof moves, choose firm structural mounting points.

Handover documents for fire detection work

After installation, the beam detector should be recorded in the commissioning documents with the beam distance, sensitivity setting, alignment values and test results. Keep the maintenance schedule with the system records, so later inspections can compare the signal level with the original values and see slow changes caused by dirt.

About brand

Hochiki is a Japanese fire detection company, established in Tokyo in 1918 as Japan's first fire alarm manufacturer, with leading insurance companies among its founders. It makes smoke and heat detectors, beam detectors, addressable fire alarm systems and emergency lighting. Hochiki America has operated in the US since 1972.

Hochiki product series

The ACD-EN is an intelligent multi sensor detector for Hochiki addressable systems.

Beam smoke detectors include the CDX FIREbeam Conex and CDX FIREbeam Xtra conventional detectors and the ESP FIREbeam Xtra addressable detector.

Multi sensor detectors combine smoke and heat sensing to detect different fire types and reduce false alarms. Beam detectors send an infrared beam across an open space and alarm when smoke reduces the signal, covering large areas with fewer devices.

Detectors must match the panel protocol and be installed and tested to the local fire code.

Where Hochiki detectors are used

Offices, hotels, schools and hospitals, and large open spaces such as warehouses, atriums and halls where beam detectors cover long distances.
