ABB FEN-01 TTL Encoder Interface Module
Description
FEN-01: two TTL encoder inputs for ABB drives
The FEN-01 is ABB’s TTL Encoder Interface, an option module that gives a compatible ABB drive up to two TTL encoder connections. Per ABB’s manual 3AFE68784603 Rev F, one input carries commutation signals and PTC thermistor support, and the module adds a TTL encoder output for emulation and two digital latch inputs. It is the choice when the motor already has a standard incremental encoder with RS-422 signals and no absolute or resolver feedback is needed.

Two TTL inputs, one with commutation
Input X31 is a plain TTL encoder input with channels A, B and Z, 500 kHz RS-422/485 signals, a 24-bit position resolution and a speed resolution of 0.004 rpm. Input X32 adds the commutation channels U, V and W and a PTC thermistor input, with a supply of 5.5 V at 200 mA or 24 V at 150 mA and a speed resolution of 0.04 rpm, which makes it suitable for permanent magnet motors that need rotor position at start. Cable lengths on both inputs are 30 m for a 5 V encoder, 60 m with two parallel 0.5 mm2 supply cables and 100 m for a 10 to 30 V TTL encoder.
Output, latch inputs and installation
The X33 output emulates the encoder for another controller, and the X34 latch inputs capture position at an external event. A voltage selection jumper X301 sets the encoder supply, a locking tab and fixing screw hold the module in the drive option slot, and the diagnostic LEDs show status. The module draws 350 mA at 24 V, limits the combined encoder, latch and cable load to 5 W, is rated IP20 and follows the drive’s ambient limits. Typical applications are conveyors, extruders, winders and permanent magnet drives where a standard incremental TTL encoder is fitted to the motor; choose the FEN-01 when you need the commutation channels or two encoder inputs, and a different FEN module when the motor has an absolute or resolver sensor.

Documents and quotation
The data on this page was read from ABB’s user’s manual for the FEN-01, linked here, and from ABB’s product page for the module. Seven Star LLC quotes the FEN-01 from Muscat; send the drive type designation so that compatibility with the option slot and firmware can be checked. Confirm before ordering that the drive, control unit and firmware support this module, and note that older manuals may predate current drive generations. More encoder interfaces are in Encoders; for fieldbus connectivity see the FPBA-01 adapter.

About brand
ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive
ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.
Where ABB products are used
In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.

Ordering ABB products: what we need
Send the full type code from the nameplate (for example ACS580-01-046A-4 or 266DSH...) and, for spare parts, the ABB ID number (such as 3BSE008508R1 or 1SBL176001R3010). For drives, add the motor power and current and any option codes (+...). For instruments, send the complete order code, which sets range, materials and approvals. Baldor motors are listed on their own brand page.
Facts checked against ABB company filings and published histories of ASEA and Brown, Boveri & Cie, October 2026.
