Reading the Autonics E40S encoder code
E40S is the 40 mm diameter shaft-type incremental encoder, and the 6 that follows is the 6 mm shaft. 2500 is the resolution in pulses per revolution. How do I read the Autonics encoder model E40S6-2500-6-L-5?
E40S is a 40 mm shaft-type incremental encoder, 6 is the shaft diameter in mm and 2500 is pulses per revolution. The following 6 indicates A, B and Z phases with their inverted signals, L is a line driver output and 5 is the 5 V DC supply. Every block has to match the encoder you are replacing.
Can I replace a line driver encoder with a totem pole or open collector version?
Not without checking the receiving device. A line driver encoder sends differential signal pairs to a matching receiver, common on servo drives and counter cards over long cables. Totem pole and open collector versions give single-ended signals at the supply voltage. Check the input specification of your drive or counter and order the same output code as before.
What is the difference between the Autonics E40S and E40H encoders?
Both are 40 mm incremental encoders. The E40S has a solid shaft and is joined to the machine shaft with a flexible coupling. The E40H has a hollow shaft and slides over the machine shaft, which saves length. Shaft or bore diameter is part of the model string, so measure it before ordering.
